Mike, Many thanks, that could be the answer, could I please have the 1851 transcript for Thomas TOMKIN and Samuel TOMKIN. The Odeon, remember it well, met my wife there on a blind date back in 1957, dont ask me what the film was !!!!!!!!!!. Jon

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 12 Apr 2005 19:31

Greeting's Again John.... I wonder if there has been a transcribe error ? On the 1851. Census there is a Thomas TOMKIN aged 31. Living at No. 31 Needle Gate but states born Leicester. Where as Samuel TOMKIN. 52. is living at 57, Needle Gate. states born Kettering Northamptonshire. Needle Gate is definitely in the parish of St. Margaret's. Just wonder if the enumerator or transcriber got carried away and put Thomas down as born Leicester ? And YES the Parish of St. George is within the City Centre. the Church is next door to the Odeon Cinema (Queens Street ) if you can remember that.... MIKE.

John Report 12 Apr 2005 18:22

Mike, again many thanks for your time and effort. Cannot understand why Samuel TOMKINS appears on the 1851 and his first son Thomas 1820 does not ?, is St George's within the City boundary?. Regards Jon

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 12 Apr 2005 14:32

Greeting’s Again John…… Sorry but there are NO Thomas TOMKINS within the age range you’ve given On the 1851. Census for the City of Leicester. The only persons coming from Northamptonshire on this Census are as follows:- Sarah TOMLINSON. Widow. 80. Born Daventry. Chris TOMLINSON. 18. App. Born Kettering. Samuel TOMKINS. 52. F.W.K. Born Kettering. John TOMKINS.59. Supper Invalid. Born Kettering. I’ve not attempted the 1841. Census as this will involve trawling Through some 40 Folders each with 50 pages and 50 names per page. Which would amount to a weeks work and that’s only for the City only. And the information given on these early Census will only give:- Name. Age. Occupation of Head, and weather born within the County or not. So if we do find a Thomas (NOT born within the County) we’ll not know If it's for Northamptonshire or not …… MIKE.

Ey up Mike Now you see my difficulty! That's the only Annie Goadby I can find and it's not the right one. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't know all three lived well into the twentieth century. Sheila

Ey up Mike I can't stay away. Have tackled my Goadbys again today. Some time ago you were able to give me the following marriage and death entries: St. Margaret's Church Leicester. Entry No.122, DEC 22, 1867, after Banns JOSEPH GOADBY, 22, bach. RIVETER, of PINGLE St, s. of JOSEPH GOADBY, FWK ANN BODYCOTE, 19, sp. of WILLOW St, d. of CHARLES BODYCOTE, FWK Wits: THOMAS GOADBY, SARAH GOADBY. and Welford Road Cemetery :- Names. / Dates. / Age. / Last known address./ Parish Area. C = Consecrated Ground. N = Section. 175. = Plot No. C = Common Land. 19001. = Burial No. GOADBY JOSEPH 14 SEP 1877 32 PALMERSTON STREET SAINT MARGARET PARISH C N 175 C 19001 I have made considerable progress now and know that Ann Goadby had two further relationships after Joseph's death, to a Mr Smith, by whom she had a son Arthur born about 1882 and to a Mr Riley, by whom she had a daugher Annie born about 1886. In the 1891 and 1901 censuses she described herself as married and gives the names Smith and Riley respectively, but there is no sign of the husbands. I've looked at the 1837 site without any great success. Do you by any chance have marriage entries? In summary she was Goadby in 1871, Smith in 1891 and Riley in 1901. Can't find her at all under any name on the 1881. Cheers Mike Sheila
