************************************************** My internet connection has gone down the pan again (using Mum's computer at the moment) so I'm not sure when I'll be back online :-( If I can't get it fixed over Easter I'll try and pop down to Mum's a couple of times *************************************************** Ann Yes I would type that in, then put an x in one of the boxes and a note in column Y Jeanette x

Hi Veronica Thanks for the occupation site. Yes it does work. Hi Jeanette, As promised l am getting back to you on the problem with the two men who were left at the end of the census under List of Persons not in house. These two men were given schedule numbers 33 and 52. The place for schedule 52 had been put down as uninhabited. You can not go back and put him in ( this will not show on the original census when viewing). What we have to do is put a note in column Y on schedule No.51 to tell the next checker that there are details at the end of the enumeration district for Sch. No. 52. The same goes for No. 33, this was completely missed off, so l left a note on No. 32. If this doesnt make sence then l will send you the email that l got from Bev . Kim

It's nice to deal with people you know but if you are stuck there is also Sorry can't get round putting the address in, as you would with the dots and at UK-CENSUS- helpers-L AT rootsweb DOT com Still can't, you can go on the mailing list at rootsweb, find Cenus UK, then pick uk census helpers. Jo :)

Hi, I am Susan in Queensland Australia. I am also a newbie. Just thought that I would introduce myself. Are you all enjoying yourselves as much as I am?. My area is Shipley 1891 Rg 123649, and so far almost all my households have at least 1 servant. None of my ancestors among them. If there were they would be the servants LOL. I am working from microfiche, so I am lost when you are all talking about your cd's. I have sent my first 6 pages to Carol and I am eagerly waiting to find out how many mistakes I am making. Cant' wait to get on with it. Susan

Hi Veronica Got your cd at last? Don't be scared. We're all here to support you and help where we can. Hi Susan Nice to meet you! Is that Shipley in West Yorks? So that's where all the posh people hang out is it! I've been doing a few pieces for the Huddersfield area and they're all mill workers Jeanette x

SuzyQ Report 2 Apr 2005 06:21

Jeanette My husband is from Shipley and he said the area i am working on has lots of big houses. No doubt I will also get a lot of mill workers. I NEED HELP FROM A COMPUTER GENIUS. My computer came with StarOffice 5.2 and I have never needed to change to any other programme. Now I find that I am unable to e-mail the work I have transcibed to Carol as the file extention comes up with an addition ie: RG123649.csv.sdv. How do do I get rid of the .sdv? Carol cannot open the file. I do not want to go any further if I am unable to send the work on. DESPERATE Susan

Jools

Jools Report 2 Apr 2005 10:28

Susan - when you save the file, you give it a name eg rg123456, then you need to save it as a type of file - make sure the file type does not have the extension sdv. If this doesn't work, use windows explorer and rename the file from rg123456.csv.sdv to rg123456.csv then try and open it with excel - if it opens ok then problem is solved.

Hi peeps! Would you believe my ISP was down this morning. Makes a change from the cat piddling on my modem I suppose! lol Thanks Jools! Susan - did it work? Ann When you downloaded the program from FreeCen, did a couple of things entitled STRUCTUR and FILEDS also come with it all? This should have all the info in it. Still stuck? lol. I'll run through it quickly but if you need more help, I'll send you my email addy. I'll be out tonight but should be around in the morning. On row 1 column A type in the RG number. On your first line (which should be row 4)in column A type the name of the parish. You only need to use this column at the beginning of each enumeration disrict. Column B is Enumeration District - you will find this on the few pages before the start of the census pages. This needs to be typed in prior to each new census page. Column C is folio number - this will be in the top right hand corner of every other census sheet in bold and applies to that page and the one following it. It needs to be typed in at the beginning of each new census page. Column D is page number - this will appear in the top right hand corner (smaller than folio no.) of odd numbered pages and the top left of even numbered pages. this needs to be typed in at the beginning of each new page. Column E is schedule number - this appears in the schedule number column on the census and needs to be entered for each new household. Column F is the house number - not all houses are numbered. If they aren't then leave blank. Column G is address - this is the name of the the street, road, house, pub etc. Column H is a bit complicated! lol. Type an x if you have any doubts about what came in the columns before this one. Type a b, u, v, or n if it appears ont the census sheet. Column I is surname - self explanatory. Column J is forename(s) - self explanatory. Column K is to put an x in if you have doubts about any of the names. Column L is the relatiosnship column - you should have a list of abbreviations to use. Coulmn M is marital condition - m for married, u for unmarried, w for widowed. Column N is sex - m for male, f for female. Column O is age - self explanatory. Column P - put an x in if you have any doubts about columns L-O. Column Q is occupation - self elxplanatory. Column R is Employment - only applies to 1891 onwards. type an r if employer, e if employee and n only when marked as not employer/employee. Column S - enter an x if you have any doubts about column Q. Column T is for the chapman county code for the county they were born in. Again this should be on one of the downloads. Column U is for the place of birth. Hopefully you will also have downloaded Genie to help you with this. Column V - place an x if any doubts about columns T or U. Column W is the disability column - only use if a disability is stated. Column X - generally left blank except for returns which ask if welsh is spoken. Column Y - this is used if you have any queries. eg. if you couldn't read the occupation put something like ?occupation. As I say Ann this is just a brief summary so I will send you my email address. But have a look round and see if you can find STRUCTUR and FIELDS as it goes into more detail. Jeanette x
