Open ended buses that everyone would pile on and go upstairs as the bus was full and only 8 were allowed to stand downstairs. When the bus started we'd come down standing on the platform or stairs and hanging on for dear life when it went around corners. Then jumping off (and on) between stops especially as the bus turned a corner and you'd go flying. Last week was actually in the post office and they were selling cards of an old corporation bus and it was mine (well the number I used everyday to school 29A in 50's and 60's. Memories so I had to buy it.

Who remembers School milk ughhh, inthe winter it was frozen and pushed the top off the bottle so you had a milk lolly and in the summer it was curdled and smelt like cottage cheese. Yes I remember the 1d bags of crisps, opposite my school was a sweet shop and when a precious delivery of the crisps arrived word went round and the shop was inundated with us bulk buying the crisps,in the end we were limited to 1 pack each. I noticed someone mentioned condensed milk my pals used to put our pennies together and buy a tin which we then ate using 1 spoon strictly one spoonful at a time, which didn't last long between 6 of us. Happy days Mary(1943)

This is a fantastic thread it brings back so many memories. Who remembers Smiths Chips at 3d a bag but every now and then the fish shop had bags of broken chips for 1d they didnt have the little blue bag of salt though. Getting bombed out and going to the relief centre with only the clothes on your back and your brother gets a pair of navy blue knickers to wear because they had no trousers to fit him. Saturday bath night in the tin bath, cleanest in first, dirtiest last and Dad rubbing us dry in front of the fire, roasting chestnuts on a shovel in the fire, wrapping a towel around your hand before you held the toasting fork so you didnt burn yourself, then eating the toast dripping with butter ah those were the days. I was born in 1940 Maureen

I still have my mother-in-law send me licorice sticks with sherbet inside. I also remember opal mints. One thing that my Mum used to do was use Kellogs tokens to take us on outings during the summer holidays. Does anybody remember getting one leg from an old pair of tights and putting a ball in the bottom and swinging it from side to side against the wall and between your knees and over your head. Andrea

Who remebers the old pre-fab houses. Just heard on the News they whant to bring them back. My list of things I did and are not PC today would fill a book. Playing with Fireworks, catching frogs and other reptiles, poaching (to us it was just fishing) Playing hide and seek on reed beds (ended up stuck in the mud doing that, Up to my chest in water and slime), playing hide and seek in a wood yard (4 or 5 ton tree trunks Ahggg), building your own home out of bricks on a building site. The list is endless, and I lived to tell the tale.

What memories we all have .. were'nt they wonderful! My memories are of mum rubbing lard on my legs to get the tar off them. If you had a bump on your head it was rubbed with butter. My nan cooking breakfast on a sunday Salt fish with bacon and the bacon fat poured over it (couldnt do that now bad for you!) You mum saying "if you get killed dont come crying to me" Getting a bath in front of the fire in a old tin bath, then someone else would get in it after you. (that would be classed as unhygenic!). Rolling the paper up and lighting it and running down the yard to the loo, burning your hands if you didnt get there before it reach the end. Putting the shovel on the fire and putting the paper over it to get it going, 9-10 times the paper went up in flames. (health and safety now think of the children they shouldnt be playing with fire) Wonderful days and we were all very very happy Im glad I lived through them. Yvonne
