I've found an ancestor on 1901 cenus living in some sort of institution in Ibstock/ ratby. The relationship to head of house is stated as 'inmate of ind school committed by magistrate'. Does anyone know if this is some sort of reform school or an orphanage? The boy is question was only 10 at the time and his father had died, i can't trace his mothers and sisters on the census Paula

Hi all Can someone tell me what an elastic web weaver actually was please? Also found part of my family on a boat at a place called Preston Brook whilst a couple of other siblings were with family elsewhere and even another child on another boat. My rels occupation then was boatmaster not just boatman. Can you tell me exactly what that was and did family travel with them while they worked? Elaine

Greeting's Again Elaine.... I've just given you a link on your other thread which will hopefully answer your enquiry re Webb wavering...... Boatmaster.... Not too sure but I think he either owned the boat.... or He /She had total responsibility for the crew. . . . And I've see pictures were the whole family are employed on board.... (lock gates, horse handlers, loading and unloading) Is " Preston Brook " in Leicestershire ? MIKE.

Thanks Mike, That's just what I needed. Preston Brook is in Cheshire, found them in 1871 there and one of the addresses on a marriage between a Powell and a Warren finds one of the children back in Leicester with possibly another brother who I had not found before, all at one of the addresses you gave me at the start of this. Another surname has popped up from this - Worris- so lots to do but will have to wait as back to work tomorrow (probably should say Morris!!!). Thanks ever so Elaine

Hi Mike, Keep the prozac to hand please!!! The Worris' are from Sheffield but that's for another day. Wondered if you could have a look on the 1861 census to see if William Warren 37 from Nothampton is around, he is the boatmaster/boatman I mentioned before married to Mary Ann Warren 24 from Leicester, am not sure if there is a son William Warren who could be 1 Elaine
