Thanks anyway Mike. Haven't done a great deal yet on hubby's side of the family - got as far as his grandparents' marriage and 2 births / baptisms for their children. They're not going anywhere so when I feel I've come to a stop with N.E. rellies, they'll be waiting! (Though I confess to peeking at the parish registers when I'm at the library transcribing!) Jan

Sue Not sure if you know Countesthorpe well but we've heard a rumour that the old Ringrose bakery (now Dine India) is going to be developed for housing. The Dine India People have bought the Cock Inn at Arnsby and are turning that into an Indian restaurant so are supposedly selling Dine India for housing. Will be a sad day if it happens cus even though it ain't a bakery anymore the outside has been vaguely the same for years Paula

Nicola Report 15 Aug 2004 01:16

George Millar Born in Ingoldsby, Lincolnshire. (nr Grantham/Spalding). (I have no dob) George was a Master Plumber and in 1896 he walked from Lincolnshire to Leicester to find work. George was a successful plumber and not only owned the family house at number 2 Gopsall Street, opposite St Peters Church in the Highfields, Leicester but also 2 rows of houses, one in Martin Street, Leicester and another in Wolverton Road, Leicester. He married Florence Ploughman. Born in Moulton Chapel Lincolnshire. (nr Spalding) Florence was educated at boarding school. Her older sisters were presented at court ('coming out' as it was called in those days was when girls were considered old enough to be presented to royal society at a special coming out ball and then attended all the social events of 'the season' which included Ascot Races, Henley Regatta etc and where they would have their first contact with men and hopefully find a rich husband). Florence missed all this by marrying George Millar, whom the rest of the family thought to be totally unsuitable. The Ploughman family had been the first to bring bulbs back from Holland to Lincolnshire to establish the now famous Spalding bulb fields. George and Florence had six children who survived: Dorothy, Madeline, Arthur & Barbara the twins, Florence and Olive. There was also another set of twins who died. Two daughters married two of the Minchin brothers who were local to the area. I am completely stuck with this now - nothing on 1901 census, have checked 1837 online and other websites too. Any info you could give me would be great. i am doing all my research from Sydney Australia where I am currently living, so it makes things a tad more difficult! Thanks! Nicky
