I have some elusive BENNETTs (prob) in the North Kilworth area. I've just copied this message over from the Bennett-history message board, in case it's any use to someone here... *** I applied for a birth cert for a George BENNETT born in N Kilworth, Leics, but when it arrived it didn't look like the right one for my purposes. Here's the info in case it's of use for someone else... 1 March 1839 at Bitteswell mother = Hannah BENNETT formerly STEVENSON, of Bitteswell father = George BENNETT, huntsman I should say that the exquisite script is not very legible: Bitteswell looks more like Bittestock or Bitteslock; Stevenson looks more like Heocuton! however, I am reasonably confident of my decryption. Bitteswell is just NW of Lutterworth; North Kilworth is almost due East, a few miles away. It could just be the right George, but I'm really after 1839 (Jun qtr) - 40 (Mar qtr) (when there doesn't seem to be a George BENNETT born in the Lutterworth area). Maybe he was registered late and it's the one or those registered in 1844 or 1849! hope this helps someone else - or that someone else can identify mine! *** What I have for mine is... The censuses mostly say he was born in North Kilworth, but one did say Kibworth but they seem to agree on Leics. 1851: age 11, vist 39 Church St, Rugby (Head= John Reynolds, innkeeper & farm) - I found this on (http://familyhistory(.)portland(.)co(.)uk/bennett/leicestershire/strays_leicestershire_1851.html) m 1862 Tipton St Martin (Pepper Box) one child b late 1871 in Bolton, Lancs, (surely there must have been some before?) 1881: aged 40, labourer, 1 Illey Pl, Ch Lane, Aston, Warks March 1887: 14 Ashleigh Pl, Baker St, Handsworth; Genrl Labourer 1891: aged 51, labourer, 96 Morville St, Ladywood I'd really like to trace some family to go with him. There weren't even any more Bennetts in the house when he was visiting in Rugby when he was only 11.

Mike. The Leicester Lad.(GC) Report 21 Aug 2004 20:27

Greeting's Christine. . . . There you go. . . . think this is the Family of George:- From a scanned image of 1841. Census return. HO107/589/06/Page 1. North Kilworth. Lutterworth Road. George Bennett.Head.35. Ag. Lab. Martha.Wife.35. Jane.Dau.11.Scholar. James.Son.10. " * William ?Gillian ?Son.10. Edwin.Son.6. * Ada ? Freda ?Dau.4. GEORGE BENNETT .SON. 1. * not able to read the name clearly. . All Born within the County of Leicestershire. Now be carefully in 1841 ages were taken to the nearest 5 years. e.g. 8 =10 7 =5. So it might not mean that James & William/Gillian were twins. Hope this is of help to you. MIKE. P.S. Just had a look on the 1837 site with the dates given There are two possibities:- ( But think this is the one you already have.) 1. George Bennett. April Qrt. 1839. Lutterworth. XV.173. 2. George Bennett. April Qrt. 1840. Blaby. XV. 53.

Christine in Herts Report 21 Aug 2004 21:59

Mike from Leicester - you're a genius! Thank you very much. I really wasn't very hopeful and only looked back on the board as a matter of courtesy - "just in case". About the 1841 census - I read somewhere quite recently - that the ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 except for the ones under 10. It also said that this system was somewhat sabotaged, not only by those who were "economical with the truth" (an attribute which censuses seem to attract!) but also by those who were (e.g.) "in their sixtieth year" (i.e. 59) being logged as 60 instead of 55. George & Martha could have been born anytime 7 June 1801 - 6 June 1806, by this reckoning (if I have my arithmetic right - after half a glass of wine... ;-) ). (The 1841 census was 6/7 June?) I might give the Blaby one a try - I had thought that N K was so near Lutterworth it had to be their local Office - certainly that ties in with the info on FreeBMD about it. BUT. A child born before 7 June 1840 would be 1 for the 1841 census, so the Blaby child is a possible match. many thanks & best wishes Christine

Christine in Herts Report 21 Aug 2004 23:42

Mike - I'm very impressed. I just came back for a quick look before shutting down (or giving my husband a chance to play!) and found a whole lot more! If George were baptised Jan 1840, then he must have been registered oddly late. (The 1839 2nd Qtr XV-173 is the one I described in my first post - Bitteswell, wrong mother-name.) OR... when did New Year move from 25 March to 1 January? If that's an old-style Jan 1840, then we'd interpret that as 1841. But I though it was much earlier than the early 19th C that the change was made. I did contact someone on GR with N Kilworth BENNETTs but George didn't figure in her records, so I'd be very grateful for what you can give me. There are one or two "father unknowns" in this branch already, so it will be a refreshing change! Many thanks Christine
