Hi Gillian

You should really start a thread of your own, rather than add to this old one

Hi Christine, Family chat....generally there's no smoke without fire! I would think that either the Essex Record Office or the central library at Walthamstow would have old postal directories. The record office should also hold electoral registers for around that time too, which you could search and hopefully find out who lived there then. Essex Record office is online for more info or you could ring them to ask what they hold. Another site for directories you could try is http://www.historicaldirectories.org Best of luck, Carole

Hi Cass. Thanks for the information and the web site address, where would i look for the street index. I am quite new to this. My mother was brought up by my "grandmother" who was wonderful but would not tell us anything about her birth mother, i beleive she was related some way (a cousin of my grandfathers) but that is only family chat. But I cannot find the connection. But i will start to troll through what i can find. Chris

Hi Christine, You might have to start trawling the birth indexes, looking for any Florence May Bawden, noting all of them as you don't know where she was born. Assume your grandmother may have only been 14 when she had your mother, so start about 1907 and work back first to 1901, you can then search the census before going any further. You could also do a search of local street directories c1921 to see if 215 Forest Rd was a private address or a home for unmarried mothers. My mother was born at a mother and baby home in 1932, but the address on her birth certificate doesn't state that fact. This was also a long way from my grandmother's home as unmarried mums-to-be were often shipped off to other parts of the country to have their babies, on the pretext of having a position in service, so that the rest of the family didn't get to know about it. There is also a Walthamstow site I think you might find useful http://www.hmsweb(.)co(.)uk/html/home.html Hope this helps a little, best wishes, Carole

There is a florence bawden on 1901, born Islington but living in Walthamstow, aged 14, maybe if you can get access to 1901 you could check the address and see if it is the same one, from there, if it is her try and find her birth certificate. These are the ones I found, unfortunately my decoder no longer works but I would hazard a guess that some of them are the same household.
