Quick Question Has any one had an age under 1 month and what did you put I have put 0 in the age column and then under 1 month in notes column. Am I right? Ann

~Von~ Report 27 May 2004 21:15

Hi Ann, I haven't come across it but according to the instructions 0 is not acceptable. If the age is less than 1 month on the census then you enter 1m (no space between 1 and m) Still haven't got my disc so I've signed up for BMD - just waiting to hear from my co-ordinator again. I told you you've have your disc finished before I get my next one!!! Von

Hi Ann Does it actually say 'under 1 month' or is the age given in weeks. These are the standard rules for age If only a number is entered, it will be converted as 'years'. Thus 46 or 46y will be converted to mean "46 Years" y (Years) maximum value = 120 m (Months) maximum value = 24m w (Weeks) maximum value = 20w d (Days) maximum value = 30d Sorry if you already knew this. OK feeling VERY pleased with myself - have downloaded SSCEN! Now all i have to do is get the hang of all the bits of info - have read it tonight but need to come back with a clear head! I'm off to the library tomorrow to see if I can use the microfiche and get started. Hope my enumerator's writing is reasonably clear! Jan

Well my library visit was interesting....! All the fiche I have been sent are of ships in Tyne dock (1891). Each captain/owner etc was to fill in the form the next morning to show who was on board at midnight. The handwriting of each man is different and not everyone understood what to write where! Add to that some very long and badly written Danish / German/ Norwegian names and I expect you understand my problem! Have emailed Carol to ask how I tackle this! I'm going away for the weekend so will dive in a gain next week. Have a good break all. Jan

Jan Gald you got a start and that sounds interesting, I am curious do you hve to transcribe from the fiche by hand and then put it on a disc? sorry for being thick!!! Ann

Jan Report 28 May 2004 16:53

Ann That's what I have to do - if I had a fiche reader at home I guess I could do it straight to the computer! I'm just hoping I've thought to write down all the vital bits of information! Jan

Hi Jan Does your local records office have a fiche reader with photocopier attached? I was of the understanding that you photocopied the pages and then took them home to transfer onto your spreadsheet. Would love to know as I'm hoping to do some from fiche if I can get tham back off the woman who's got them. Jeanette

Hiya Rick Just couldn't help crowing there! I'm feeling quite pleased with myself. If you can think of a way of doing it I don't mind. I'm trying to get some fiche back off someone who has given up but she doesn't seem to want to part with them! My guess is she's spilled her cuppa on them and ruined them but won't own up! lol I've got a bit of transcribing to do for YorkshireBMD but I'll help out if you want. Jeanette

Hi Jeanette, That's really sweet of you but I was joking ! I'm on a mission here and I don't give up easily. The last couple of pages were easier to read so I'm on a bit of a run now. Have only got to get to page 50 and then it's plain sailing. Thanks :-) Rick.

Rick I'm glad it's getting easier to read. I hit a bad patch in the middle of mine and it makes it such hard going. I've sent my finished piece off now so I'm waiting for the next one. Glutton for punishment or what! Jeanette

Hi Jeannette I've been away (camping - no rain!!!) so have only just seen your comment. The library said copies were 25p each - there must be 30 pieces per fiche - it would get quite expensive. Now if I had a laptop it would be easier..! Will wait to find out what to do with my sailors and fishermen before tackling any others. Jan

}((((*> Jeanette The Haddock <*)))){ Report 1 Jun 2004 00:49

Hi Jan Yes I suppose it will work out expensive that way. I'd never really stopped to think about how many photocopies would have to be done. Now, thinking about how many pages I've gone through on the disc, I see what you mean. Might have to save that one til I win the lottery then! lol Jeanette
