susie manterfield(high wycombe) Report 8 Apr 2004 15:05

hi rosemary im so glad im not the only one.i was beginning to think i was a dim wit!!! lol i had no instructions either i am so confused about it:( susie

Rosemary Report 8 Apr 2004 15:12

Susie, My problem is UI am not very adept at using the computer. I can usually get a disk up and working though. Do you think someone just forgot to add an instruction leaflet, or are we all expected to be Computer whizzes? I made myself get all the housework done this morning then sat down with a coffee to look at the disk. Iwas sofrustrated when I couldn't get it to work. Still the cleaning is done Rosemary(Essex)

Hi Susie & Rosemary, My CD was waiting for me when I got home. Your coordinator should have given you a link to some instructions - mine did. You need to download some software - I'm just about to give it a go, so I'll ket you know how I get on. The software is here..... http://freecen.rootsweb(.)com/software/incens/SSDOWN.HTM Remove the brackets from the link. Rick.

Hi, for those who are stuck on what to do you need to go onto the frecen site and down load all the things you need. On the web page it is under Transcriptions, soft ware to do it. You need the SSCENS. There is also the GENIE that is very good to help you with place names etc. I also printed the pages out so I had them to hand because you do have to shorten some family members titles, like, brother in law to brolaw and also the codes for birth place etc. If you look at the censdemo you can see how things are to put in the columns. You need the blank to start your work on. The census discs you got are just how they would be sold as you go scroll down it will have page by page as it was done. I hope this helps......If not give a shout!!!! Good luck, best wishes, Jo

Rick Report 8 Apr 2004 19:06

Susie, Downloaded the software now but hunger pangs are setting in so I'm going to organise some dinner. I'll play with it later over a couple of glasses of wine & let you know how I get on ! Rick.

susie&rick, glad to hear you've both got your C.D. i'm still waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe soon eh! i hope so. chris.

Rosemary Report 8 Apr 2004 21:07

Jo, Susie and Rick, I had already downloaded the software. I brought up SSCENS and tried to load the disk but nothing happens (apart from a great deal of whirring). Apparently a code word is needed to exit from SSCENS. I've just had to close the computer down to exit! What am I doing wrong? Rosemary(Essex)

Rick Report 8 Apr 2004 21:51

Hi Rosemary, Here's a link to the Devon 1861 site where my co-ordinator has posted some really helpful stuff to get you going.... http://myweb.tiscali(.)co(.)uk/terryleaman/1861-web-site/main.htm Remove the brackets from the link. If you follow this through step-by-step you should get there in the end. I really don't get why they ask you to put it on floppy. The files you download are compressed (including SSCENS) and extract themselves to the location you run them from. All I did was follow the download instructions, but put them all in a new folder called FC on my C: drive. Then again, I work in IT and always ignore all the instructions in the manuals LOL! I then double-clicked on SSCENS, CSVCHK and GENIE01 to extract the compressed files. After that you need to print everything out that Terry suggests on the Devon site and play around with the CENSDEMO file to see how it all works. It's complicated !! I'm going to leave trying to do my first few pages until tomorrow as the wine has now kicked in ;-) Hope some of this makes sense. Rick.

Unknown Report 8 Apr 2004 22:05

I think Rick has explained well there. But if your problem is with the disk itself......I have to put my disc in then open it through my computer and double click the disc drive its in. Then it comes on. Have you got abode acrobat reader on your computer? You need that to read the disc.

Rosemary Report 9 Apr 2004 12:03

Jo and Rick, Many thanks. I'll have another go now I've had a night's sleep. Perhaps this time it will work. Rosemary(Essex)

Rick Report 9 Apr 2004 14:27

I've fallen at the first hurdle :-( Cant read the registration district or enumeration district number due to a big black splodge. The schedule & street number/name columns are so feint on the first 50 pages that I can hardly read them at all. Page 1 is a nightmare too - my 5 test pages are going to have lots of x's on them. Someone say something encouraging ! Rick.

Unknown Report 9 Apr 2004 17:37

Keep your chin up Rick, you can only write what you see.....If you cant see you cant put it! I think the best thing would be to write any letters at all you can see, even is its just one. Then put a cross and when you send it in say how bad the image was. Good luck, Jo

Rick Report 9 Apr 2004 17:49

Thanks Jo - I needed that ;-) Rick.

Rick Report 9 Apr 2004 19:16

Some questions for you experts: I can just about read the last address on my first page - schedule 299, 7 Brandreth Terra. There are six families in two houses before this, but only one of the schedule numbers is readable, neither of the house numbers are and I can't really read the street name. Should I infer the schedule numbers are 293 to 298 ? The "shape" of the streetname is about right to be Brandreth Terra - shall I put this or leave it blank ? Can I assume the house numbers are 5 and 6 or do I leave them blank ? Rick.

Rosemary Report 9 Apr 2004 20:29

Jo and Rick, Success at last thanks to your help. I thought the Devon website was most helpful. I'm pleased to say my first page is relatively legible. I have Maiden Bradley Wiltshire. I will make a proper start tomorrow. Rosemary(Essex)

Rick Report 9 Apr 2004 21:40

Glad you're up & running Rosemary. It's a bit of a come-down to have the first 50 pages with so many problems in them. Perhaps I should do it all backwards, but I expect that would confuse the 'puters no end ! Rick.

Rick Report 9 Apr 2004 22:11

Hi Karen, I'm far too stubborn to give up that easily ! I just need some advice on what to leave blank and where it's safe to make assumptions. For example, I'm pretty sure all the houses are in the same street on the first page. Should I go with what I think is true or should I only write what I can see 100% is the question ? Just think - if I make it to page 51 then I should be able to do it with my eyes shut ! Rick.
