I've been trying to reply to Stephanie to say that I have a marriage certificate from 1868 with a groom 'full age'. I contacted the relevant register office and was told this meant over 21. It was probably the same in 1854. I'm new to message boards but I kept gettong a box saying add a title and couldn't get it to work. Hope this helps.
