Hello! You helped me some time ago with information about my Toones from Thurcaston - I wonder whether you can help me again, please? I have a William Thompson, b 1765 Rearsby. His wife is Hannah, born 1767, Barkby. I have found a marriage on the IGI, giving her maiden name as Illston - but it's a submitted record, which I know is not reliable information. Could you have a look to see if there is a marriage for William Thompson and Hannah, please? Many thanks! Rosemary

Could you check out a baptism on your discs for me if you have time, Mike? I'm looking for the birth/baptism of Joseph and Hannah Pool's son James, who was born c. 1843. The only likely birth I can see on FreeBMD is for James Alexander Pool in Leicester in the 3rd quarter of 1843, but I'm dubious about that middle name (he was plain James Poole when he got married). Joseph and Hannah were living in Burgess Street, All Saints, at the time. They were married at St. Margaret's, so I assume James would be baptised either there or in another nearby C of E church.

Yes, I already have them on all the censuses, thanks, Mike (except the missing 1861), but I wasn't convinced that James Alexander was the same person, although the year's right. There isn't another Alexander anywhere in the family, and it doesn't sound right to me. That'd be great if you have time to check the parish registers, thanks very much.

By the way, Mike, I don't suppose you're old enough to remember the trams in Leicester, are you? The pre-war ones had the name Pool on them (Joseph's grandson was the Leicester City Transport Manager).

MaryfromItaly Report 7 Aug 2007 11:28

That's very kind of you, Maggie, but I know St. Margaret's very well. I was brought up near Leicester, and my parents were married at St. Margaret's. Mind you, I must admit that I've spent more time at St. Margaret's bus station than the church over the years. Actually I'd always wondered why my mother's family always went to St. Margaret's when they lived right the other end of town - Fosse Road South and Hinckley Road. Then when I started researching my tree I found that the Pools (her father's ancestors) had lived in that area since at least 1841.

MaryfromItaly Report 7 Aug 2007 11:28

It looks as though I may be able to get over to England this summer for the first time since I started my tree. The main place I want to go is Lichfield, but I shall also have to plan trips to the Records Office at Wigston, Welford Road Cemetery, Quorn, Woodthorpe and Barrow, and I'm hoping that the lady who keeps the Rothley Baptist registers will be free too. I hope Rothley isn't overrun with journalists at the moment...
