National Insurance numbers!

I am currently looking up my dad's war record from the MOD...and in the course of doing so, I was told that they would need his National Insurance number. Dad died in 1979, but after phoning the appropriate office, I was told that all I needed to do was take a copy of his death certificate and proof of MY identity to a job centre, it would be no problem.

Oh really. TWICE now I have spoken to people at these places, and TWICE some frightened little jobsworth has been mumbling about data protection and 'not knowing if your father is actually dead'. I get the impression that sometimes these guys couldn't pass wind without a triplicate form 337B, and only if it had been approved by Mr Hodgkins....

I just want someone who knows what they are doing to TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO KNOW!
