Just a reminder as you all prepare for Christmas, to remember the 12 young people that we lose each and every week to this Silent Killer. Like my son Stephen. We never ever expect to lose a child, and when we do, we change, we can never be the same again, a part of us will always be missing, I will always love and miss you Stephen. May I ask every one to educate themselves about SADS / CRY and then educate your family and friends. Happy Christmas x.

The thread was started by Genes Member Gillian Jennifer Shield when her son Stephen died suddenly aged If I remember correctly 32, from a condition known as SADS which is short for Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, Stephen was followed soon after wards by his baby son, also named Stephen a victim of SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Gillian started the thread in memory of her Son but also to bring the life threatening disease to the notice of people on Genes and the Internet.
Whenever we hear on the news that a teenager or young adult has dropped dead either at school or playing football etc., it can usually correctly be assumed that it is SADS, usually they are perfectly health young people and there is no apparent reason they should die suddenly. Gillian started a petition to the Prime Minister and collected signatures on here and personally and with friends asking for the Government to bring in compulsory screening for school children to see whether they carry the factor which causes SADS. Progress has been made but I personally have not heard that the request was carried out to the full. Gillian's sister was able to afford to have her children screened privately and it was found that her children were at risk and Gillian's nephew had a defribrillator fitted to shock his heart if it became necessary, saving his life. Gillian has continued working with the SADS Association as much as possible between working full time and giving time to the rest of her family.
To me she has become a dear friend and is truly a Daniel, she has dared to have a purpose firm and dared to make it known to as many people as possible.

oh how terrible,sads is the same as cot death ,but the victims are older,teenagers and adults.its horrible to lose a child at any age,but to lose your son when hes in his 30s for no reason must be devastating.x

Gillian lost her son to Sads.He was only 30ish so sad.Also all her children and her sisters had to be tested.Some of them carried the gene.

Read to day of another victim of SADS, a beloved, healthy 16 year old daughter. Sending loving thoughts to her parents and reminding people of this ever constant threat to our young ones.
