Malc /GG and Jackie Report 14 May 2008 21:46

Wedding Dress and there are lots of beads missing, threads pulled and loose cotton. When I tried the dress on the lady in the shop assured me that all the beads would be replaced and anything that needed doing would be seen to. When I went to get the dress, the owner of the shop was there. She shoved the dress into a plastic bag and that was it. I stupidly assumed all the work had been done. My daughter had just checked my dress, as she has been told that Wedding Dresses should not be kept in plastic bags as it makes them sweat and go mouldy. She has just rung me to say that none of the repairs have been done and my dress is all screwed up. I am gutted. Will be on the phone to the shop first thing Friday (they are closed tomorrow).

Oh Jackie, how upsetting for you. Before you do anything, take photos of all the problem areas and be prepared to contact trading standards or ask them what to do before you talk to the shop on Friday.
Good luck at getting things sorted out properly, can you stop the payment you made?

It is awful for you Jackie, both my daughter and dil had trouble with their dresses too........you must feel sick.....

Is it the sort of dress you can hang up and steam it from underneath.......and perhaps match the beads and sew them yourself........I know you shouldn't have to do it, but this shop and staff sound like a right shower.....

I just hope it all turns out OK.......fancy stuffing your dress into a plastic bag......never heard the like......x

Unfortunately, I paid in cash!!

The shop I got it from is one of the largest wedding shops in East Anglia. They have been there for years, thats why I went there - didn't expect anything like this to happen.

It has dozens and dozens of tiny beads on the skirt. I would never be able to match them and certainly not sew them back on. Some of the embroidery has come undone as well and it would take someone with a very good eye for sewing to repair it. Basically, I don;t see why I should do it anyway. I bought the dress in good faith and was told all the "repairs" would be done.I feel so let down.

Jackie,Sorry to hear about your dress and from a shop.My mum is a dressmaker and she made my eldest daughters wedding dress and all her bridesmaids dresses. She also made my youngest daughters prom dress 2 years ago.I could not complain as they were made beautiful.my mum has been doing machining since she was 14 and is now 78 and still has a work room and does private work.Hope you get yours sorted out to a good standard. Was it in a sale jackie, i.e. was it reduced because it needed repairs? If not I would go back and tell them if they are not prepared to fix it you will be going to trading standards.

No Ann, I paid full price for it - and it wasn't cheap!!. I pointed out the defects when I first tried it on and the lady assured me it would all be done when I collected it. It is my dream dress, exactly what I was looking for and it fitted perfectly,so I went ahead and bought it there and then. Oh well, next time I get married, I will be more careful!!! LOL - only joking Malc

Jackie

Take photo's of the damage, take the dress back and point out the repairs were not done as long as you have your receipt she has to honour the repairs of give you a refund, she will soon get the work done.

You have a few weeks to get it sorted hun im sure it will be ok

Something similar happened to me the owner of the shop i got my dress from had her baby premature mid her taking in my dress so was in hospital, I only got my dress back the night before the wedding and hadnt even tried it on until I got up in the morning of the big day, was very scary but I said if it didnt fit or wasnt ready I would go get married in me jeans and t shirt lol

Am taking my dress back to the shop tomorrow and will refuse to move until they have agreed to do the necessary repairs. I have a horrible feeling that my dream dress may turn out to be a nightmare. I feel a trip to Primark coming on for a replacement outfit!!

Jackie,

It's an awful disappointment for you. If the shop aren't cooperative, tell them you are not going to move from the front of the shop and you are going to show passers by the dress.

Yes I know it's blackmail but it worked when my son told a certain high street electrical store that he was going to stand outside with a placard stating "?????sells cr*p" He got what he wanted within 15 minutes!

Good luck

Got my dress sorted at last. It took the shop two weeks and they were not happy about it. She implied that I had damaged the dress myself - why would I do that!! - and said that they would never have let the dress go out in that condition.

I thanked them for repairing the dress and was greeted with a dirty look and a "snort" from one of the women as I left the shop!! - certainly won't be recommending them to anyone.
