My daughter has this allergy, she first found out when she went to the gym and did exercise with those things that look like large rubber bands, face started to swell, also eyes and mouth, she was told to take an anti histamine and it went she didn' know that it had been caused by the band only found this out later. When a friends daughter was getting married and we went to help get the reception venue decorated and offered to blow up the balloons, daughter ended up being taken to hospital face so bad couldn't see, people waiting in emergency room thought she had been beaten up! she now has to tell doctor, dentist, ect not to tough her with latex and cannot let her children have balloons or let them get near her.

Hi when my friend was a midwife she was having itchy eyes and thought it was her mascara. She tried all sorts on her arm and no reaction. I don't remember how but she found it was the powder on the latex gloves at work. A test at the doctors proved it. So she used the powder free ones and was okay

antihistamine tablets in sainsburys about 70p for seven. Ask at the chemist for own brand!

Joanne in Burgess Hillâ„¢ Report 29 May 2008 23:59

I have latex allergy. My hands and wrists end up bright red, itchy, hot and weepy. The rest of my body isn't affected. It doesn't matter whether the gloves are powder-free or not.
A good alternative is nitrile gloves - they come in green, blue or purple though.

I found out by constantly having eczema on my hands during the week, and started to clear up at weekends and when I was on holiday.

What is the hand rub that you use? I am also allergic to aldehydes which is in some of those.

MrDaff Report 29 May 2008 23:13

Yes I have it.... and very uncomfortable it is too!!

I used to buy my own gloves as a carer... and it is one of the reasons I trained in Health and Safety... long story!!

Rosalyn, most of the modern antihistamines do not make you drowsy... the old fashioned ones did and are now sold at pharmacists as *sleep aids*.... they are still the best antihistamines if you don't have to work and have a fairly serious reaction to something, though (NOT anyphyllactic, (sp) that is SERIOUS). And are in a position to be able to allow yourself to sleep for about 10 hours!! But piriton and loratidine (available at pharmacies) are non-drowsy these days.

I have multiple sensitivities, but a life threatening allergy to Aspirin and Nsaids... bummer when you've got rheumatoid arthritis, lol! And a less serious but debilitating sensitivity to coconut, latex, lanolin and sommat in those under-eye creams you can buy!!

If you have a sensitivity.... your practice has to provide you with the appropriate gloves.

Also... an awful lot of people are sensitive to the talc used in some gloves... and that spreads around as you pull your hands out, you can't help it!!

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Love

My hands are fine. I thought it may have been the spirit I rub on my hands and maybe touched my eye but don`t think so now it`s on my legs, Ros xx

Hiya Ros

I worked in a kitchen for years...and the strong washing up liquid sent my skin raw sometimes till it cracked and bled...so I started wearing marrigolds...the ichy powered stuff inside was worse....this went on for years....was sent for allegy tests...and was tester for rubber..yep then they did the latex one ...a DR had to be there with a antiwhatsit injection...and it can cause low BP and slow your heart beat down..as you will know....they did a tiny slit in my arm and put a pinhead bit on a cotton bud.....stright away it began to swell...so thats how I know and even when I had my op the DR had to wear something else and I cant wear plasters or miroctape...
