Because of new 42 day rule

Any thoughts??

Eldrick Report 12 Jun 2008 14:36

I fully applaud his stance - a rare touch of standing by principles which is sadly lacking in modern politicians.

I wholeheartedly support his stance. This nanny state with its constance surveillance and manipulation of peoples lives is abhorrent and anyone who stands up to it should be applauded.

And to the ones that say - I have nothing to fear....from more government control over my life - cast your minds back to a certain European country only 60 years ago........

The foundations for a totalitarian police state have now been laid: anyone may now be incarcerated for 6 weeks without charge or evidence (but 42 days does give the police plenty of time to make something up); any individual minister may make, amend or repeal any law without the "burden" of due process (i.e. without going through parliament - the last person I know to give himself that privilege was Hitler); we have the greatest concentration of surveillance cameras in the world; our every act and meeting can be monitored; rights of protest have been severely curtailed; an individual can be arrested and held for heckling a government minister. ID cards will be the icing on the cake.

You may have nothing to hide, but you do have a lot to fear.

Deanna

Deanna Report 12 Jun 2008 14:49

Me too.

Of course it has to go through the house of Lords... which I think/hope will reject it.

I also applaud this man.
He appears to be a man of principal. There will be a by-election in his constituancy (date to be set)

Lib-Dems have already stated that they will not be fielding anybody in opposition to him, That just leaves Labour........................Welcome back Mr Davies from your short sabatical

Such a huge pity that such an honest and honourable man is leaving................we need more like him, not less.

I agree with him 100%..............this is a political move and has very little to do with national security.

SheilaSomerset Report 12 Jun 2008 15:17

I agree with him too, and I totally oppose the 42-day detention without trial. I just hope the House of Lords chuck it out!

Jean Durant

Jean Durant Report 12 Jun 2008 15:34

Well I'm in the minority here cos I don't believe it's a matter of principle. If it was he would stay and fight it.

We all know that, rightly or wrongly, the House of Lords will throw it out.

Just for the record I am in favour of the 42 day detention rule.

Jean.

How refreshing to have an honorable man who is not afraid to stand up for his principles.

If only there were more of them !!and not the sycophantic a**e lickers that abound in the so called Labour party. And as for the Irish DUP(E)s who voted with the Gov they should be ashamed of themselves.

Good on yer David Davis(just wish I could vote for you)

Well done David Davis.

Sarah Report 12 Jun 2008 16:07

I like the idea of someone willing to take a stand and make clear they oppose something. I TOTALLY disagree with extending detention without trial or evidence.
The problem is, it seems about 2/3rds of the population think it's a great idea - 'it'll not affect me cos I'm not a terrorist' - ! yeh right! not much good being innocent once you're detained and if you ain't allowed to prove it or get equal rights to trial is it...?
By-election wise -how many of these 2/3rds live in his constituency?
Incidentally - they're also suggesting as 'concessions' that parliament to look at issues before decisions on detention are made. Supposedly, this would be re general scenarios not individual cases. In practice if it only happens when there's a case, then it could be obvious who it's about, surely? The impact is that cases would be prejudiced. So wouldn't sticking to normal Court Processes give a better chance of staying fair and catching wrong doers?!

Mary

Mary Report 12 Jun 2008 16:48

It is not just the 42 day rule that David Davis is making a stand on,it is also all the other things that the Labour party have introduced since coming to POWER!!!
CCTV cameras, useless for catching criminals but great for catching motorists and litter droppers to raise revenues.
Imposition of more and more rules from EU.
Spying on refuse bins to make sure that you do not recycle the wrong things.
The list is endless.
We now live in a totalitarian state and just wait til ID cards come in.
No one has any right to privacy anymore(unless you are a Labour MP).
This Government has more info about each individual than ever before(unless you are an Illegal and they do not know that you are here!!!).
It has nothing to do with Terrorism,it is all about CONTROL(of you and me)

I like David Davis and would have preferred him as leader to David Cameron. I think his exit is a great loss to the Conservative Party. I have to admire his honesty and the fact that he is sticking firmly to his principals though. Shame more politicians aren't as honest as him. I wish him luck xx

I feel the same way as Jean and Lynda on the 42 day rule. I still admire the man for acting on his beliefs even if I do not agree with them.

The 42 day rule is a fantastic idea.
It would not allow the police time to gather evidence and make a good case but would mean that they could investigate properly which would hopefully help stop mistrials etc when they came to court.

its only my opinion but I think David Davies is a man of principal and good on him for making a stand in this way but as I have said earlier in the piece I am in favour of this rule and hope that the Lords pass it onto the statute books and that it becomes law.

Muffyxx
