.......................................................................Am I the only person who thinks the amount of money Wayne Rooney and Coleen McLoughlin have spent on their wedding is obscene.

I realise it is their own money and they have 'worked' for it and can spend it however they choose but to hear figures like £5,000,000 being spent in one day on fripperies when there is so much poverty and cruelty in this world I find hard to
accept.

Before anyone has a go I realise it has made work for people and I am sure they do their bit for charity but I still can't see how they can justify spending that amount of money on one day.

I think I'm too old for this world.

No you're not on your own in feeling like this Jean. OH and I were saying the same yesterday xx

In that case I'm too old as well, Jean.

They've sold exclusive rights to a magazine which will help towards the cost but how much more I would have admired them if they had, at least, donated that fee to charity.

OMG Gwynne, another couple on the bandwagon.

Jean, I think "obscene" is the appropriate word for it. You've said what I think.

Mind you, as an observation (from TV), I've found that really expensive marriages with more pomp, pink and fluffy etc. don't last very long.

I'm still glad I had the wedding that we had in 1997! Wouldn't want the sort of wedding they had. Yeuk.

on the fence here a bit!

its their money so they can do with it what they like..........
however yes 5 million quid COULD have been spent more wisely.......

Bob

But are they not like politicians a bit? not of this REAL world?

Libby Report 13 Jun 2008 09:41

Think I must be too old as well.

I agree it is up to them to spend their money as they wish but do we have to have it on the TV and in the papers all the time ? As bad as Posh and Becks!

Is anyone really interested?. I'm not.

What is worse is some people can hardly afford to eat properly/ pay the mortgage or rent etc.

They probably don't even know what the credit crunch is.

Thanks everyone for answering. I am so pleased to think there are others who agree.

The way the media have reported this is out of proportion too. For goodness sake he is a talented footballer (and that's open to discussion) lol and she is a 'celebrity' because she is with a footballer.

Bob I do understand what you're saying
but surely they could have kept it a
little more low key.

well i think its their money so its up to them how they spend it........apparently they haven't asked for wedding presents but asked for money to be donated to charity.

......perhaps the question needs to be should footballers be paid such an obscene amount of money.

I can't even imagine what you could possibly buy in order to reach that sum! Especially as it was supposed to be a family event.

If all the gawpers stopped showing interest by not buying these so called 'celebrity' magazines the exclusivity offers would be less financially obscene and these couples would be spending their own money not the readers!

I must be too old as well.

but it happens in everyday life, how many true stories I have read in Womens Magazines, where the couple have about four children, and say- 'We cant afford to get married'

They could, but they want all the fripperies, big white wedding, costing thousands.

Kay???? Report 13 Jun 2008 10:00

I agree is a **reportedly** vast amount of money to lash out,,,,but some will be recouped from the picture rights of the magazine,,***,lets hope we see a large donation made to a worth while course,***but they cant be held responsible for all the crulety in the world regardless of how much dosh they have,,,,,or the same could be said of others who have millions sitting in the bank who could make a little impression,,,,like our head of the country her millions could do much good,

I would like to have seen the marriage palva take place in this country putting a wage in someones pocket,

They maybe make large donations to certian good causes,,?

But you may have one up on them Jean,,you live in the real world wrapped by warmth and love of all those you know care for you,,,,,,,,worth millions is that,:}}

I wonder how true the **reported** figure is??

I believe that footballers are paid vast sums of money - but think how much of it goes back into this country in the form of tax in the higher tax bracket.

Deb Vancouver (18665) Report 13 Jun 2008 10:12

I'm with you on this one Jean.
I think that "white" weddings are a waste of money.

I've already told M she is getting a ladder :) I would rather they spend the money on a down payment for a house.

When we got married in 1979, we had a civil ceremony, then took everyone out for a great lunch (all 8 of us).

We honeymooned for 2 days on Vancouver Island and was back at work on the Monday!
A couple of weeks later we rented a hall and had all of our friends and family there.
Friends of ours Mums cooked turkeys and hams, salads etc. In other words everyone pitched in. It was BYOB, but we supplied the wine.

The money that we would have spent went to have our first house built. Something that I have never regretted.

So no, you are not alone on this!!

*confesses to hating football*

It seems to me that the obscene wages paid to players have priced football out of reach of a lot of genuine fans. I was staggered to read how much season tickets cost.

Some clubs have gone broke trying to pay the "going rate" for players. I would say that if a club has to go into debt to pay their wages then it has got out of hand.

InspectorGreenPen

InspectorGreenPen Report 13 Jun 2008 10:56

It is totally obscene, and it seems the more you have the more you spend on unnecessary things. Yes, by all means enjoy your weeding day but £5m?

It equates to around 500 YEARS wages for someone on the minimum wage.

As far as tax in concerned, yes they do pay 40% as does anyone earning over around £30k, but bet your dollar that they have accounts working flat out to make sure much of it is salted away tax free in some haven or other.

Deanna Report 13 Jun 2008 11:02

No Jean you are not alone.
We have always thought that this amount of money is obscene.... in wages, and I don't care what your job is....

A footballer can pay that for a wedding, and a man can work 16 hours a day, for minimum wage??

Something wrong?
DEFINITELY.
