In several of Miss Read's books, one of the characters, Nelly Piggot, runs off with the oilman. He went around the houses with oil for sale, don't know what it was used for though. |

an oilman was someone who delivered oil to peoples' houses for their oil lamps - my Dad told me that when he was little and in school he and his brother used to run home chasing George the Oil in his horse and cart - their mother used to get very annoyed with them cos Dad had asthma and he could hardly breathe when he arrived home!! So there you have it. selling oil for lamps!! |

Can anyone tell me what did an 'OILMAN' do in 1882 (in Ipswich, England)? |
