ok there doesn't seem to be an updated driver for that machine on the Acer site so we'll uninstall and reinstall now

On the Driver tab click on Uninstall and then you will need to reboot your machine.

The drive was removed for cleaning at some point which would suggest the possibility of a loose connector but you would be more likely to have a total malfunction if that was the case.
The digital CD playback option would surely mean that it would never have worked though.
I just want to see if Acer have a driver before I uninstall/reinstall.
I agree about the generic driver from the cache list.

if you get him to remove device in device manager
if a driver is currupyt it will reinstall windows driver on reboot looks like hes using win xp driver from driver cacha anyways

also has he move pc atall ribon cable could be loose or faulty he could try other ide port

i wouold go for the remove option first in device manager
also in cdrw propertise he could try untick digital cd playback it can cause problems with some cd`s

It wouldn't update the driver so I'll do it the opposite way round Surfmonkey.
It's possible that the driver has become corrupted but rather than use a drive specific one it should be ok with the generic Windows driver.
