The drive was removed for cleaning at some point which would suggest the possibility of a loose connector but you would be more likely to have a total malfunction if that was the case.
The digital CD playback option would surely mean that it would never have worked though.
I just want to see if Acer have a driver before I uninstall/reinstall.
I agree about the generic driver from the cache list.
Cheers Surfmonkey

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 18:23

ok there doesn't seem to be an updated driver for that machine on the Acer site so we'll uninstall and reinstall now

On the Driver tab click on Uninstall and then you will need to reboot your machine.

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 18:54

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 18:56

You can open the drawer by pushing something like a straightened out paperclip into the little hole by the drive.
Can you go through the process of listing the drivers again for me so I can see if anything has changed?

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 18:57

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 19:14

ok it says exactly the same

C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32C:\WINDOWS\system32NTIDrvr.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\UBHelper.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

and the ticks are the same

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 19:18

On the third one, is there no slash between system32 and NTIDrvr.sys?

yes sorry, there is \ between them

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 19:31

Thought so lol
I doubt very much whether this will now make a difference but try the update driver option again and tell it to search on the internet.
Another thing we can try after that is a manual install of drivers and you may want to just double check that the connecting cables are pushed right in (when the machine is switched off!) although, again, I don't think that is the problem.

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 19:33

ok will try update again

skwirrel 1 Report 16 Jun 2008 19:38

ok it did an internet search but said cannot find a better match

eRRolSheep

eRRolSheep Report 16 Jun 2008 19:45

ok one other thing to try is a system rollback but I don't particularly want to go down that route if possible.
Do you want to try to manually replace the drivers? This will be a bit long winded with no guarantee of success.
Incidentally, does it still say "This device is working properly"?
