Oh Caz.

Did they take his car? did he have to pay?

It's bad enough trying to keep car on the road without them taking it and then saying it will cost £105 to get it back..

If we can check why couldn't the police ? so I would like them to explain why they say it takes 21 days...

It only shows that there is insurance in place for the vehicle, not that the driver at the time is covered on that policy.

An expiry date would be useful, but that's too much to hope for !

You can easily check if your vehicle is registered as insured on the motor insurer's database.

We have to carry all our documents in the car at all times. We have a little sticker to say we have insurance, plus the main documents in the car and the same for the MOT. Strangely we don't have the little sticker for tax, just a piece of paper to prove we have paid. My only concern would be all documents being in the car if it is stolen, but it doesn't happen that often here.

There was no need to delete the advice. As I said it was the advice that Pat should follow. As an ex Police officer you were bound to know the correct procedure. But what I also meant was the well meaning advice given by other people is just that, well meaning and should not be disparaged. I think that sometimes you have an unfortunate way of putting things and people like myself think you are putting the advice or ideas of others down.

maybe it is your police training, everything is black or white. You are fortunate to have inside information about police matters, we, the general public, have to do the best we can and approach who we think may help.

I am sure that Pat is grateful to be pointed in the correct direction.

What gets my goat is... even if you are proved to be insured you still have to fork out the £105 to get your car back and then if you don't get it before 12 noon next day you are charged storage fee..
I was going to email my MP to ask if he could find out why it takes up to 21 days for insurance details to get onto police data base.. but would you credit it he is about the only one without email address..
Why should you have to ask insuance company to refund the money not their fault!!! I still think officer should have tried again to phone my insurance company.....I wonder how many cars went past without insurance .tax...while we are totally legal.

I am sorry that you think I am putting other pieces of advice down. I would prefer people not to confuse straight talking with 'putting things down'.

Pat, I suggest you take Eldrick's advice. he has a funny way of putting it by putting other offers of advice down but in this case he obviously knows what he is talking about.

I hope you get it sorted, anything like this is frightening and shows the police in a bad light. I didn't know that you didn't get on the data base immediately. if that is true it is frightening. If it is true I suggest you put a warning in your local or a national paper to that effect. Maybe your insurance company can confirm whether or not it is true.

Or Eldrick, maybe, as you seem to know, can you confirm it?

Hi All.

Would anyone complain about this....
Keith was stopped by police. saying that the car his was driving was not insured... ans also flagged with drugs .he was horrified, as we are insured..
He called home and got the insurance company , my son was going to take it down but police officer said no..they couldn't get through to insurance so checked their data base which said no insurance, car was taken away.. OH was cautioned and told he would have to go to court...so many peeps we know went past....also to get car back was going to cost £105.
I went to police station with all documents and was told you still have to pay the money. so I went to town and demanded to know about the drugs issue. the police officer came to talk to us..I went mad in the end he went to get advice. came back with if I can get in touch with your insuance company and you have insurance we will pay the money...Yes we were insured....and was told that it takes up to 21 days for your insurance to get onto there data base, we have been with the same insurance for years .. No sorry about this was said..... and I am so angry about it...I poor Oh insisted the car was insured..and was basically called a liar...when I said why couldn't you have waited for insurance to answer the phone I was told can't spend long on one incident.... was also told insurance document isn't worth the paper it's written on... I asked about the dugs thing and he said it was a Met Flag and would find out about it and call me .. Oh NO he hasn't....

Who do I complain to....and why does it take 21 days... so when you renew your insurance you can be stopped in those 21 days...
