Stray,

Oh yes you can...lol

Kids used to help with birthing, feeding and butchering and of course mucking out! They also went with OH to the slaughterman.

They needed to know what raising food was all about and although they would sometimes be sad when a particular animal went to slaughter they appreciated the life the animal been given through their efforts. Then they stuck their fork in..

Cumbria caz your not soppy, its not for every one. I cannot get involved at all in the slaughtering process. only the cooking end of things. The kids naturally wanted to see, and if later they make a choice to be a veggie then they can base it on true research.

Caz,

You wouldn't be soppy when turning the calves out in the Spring. You have to work so hard to get them through the cow shed door it's exhausting. Then after they find out that the concrete yard is slippery and that they HAVE to move their legs to get to the fields and it's up to you to get them to move (I won't go into details) you aren't sloppy about them at all.

As for sheep, they are the thickest beings on this earth!!!!!

Hi Sue - I agree with you about sheep - someone once said 'if there's a way of dying - a sheep will find it'.

I have raised cows and eaten them, I have no problem with that as I know they had a good life, I'd much rather know where the animals came from and how they were treated.

*waits for hate mail*

We also used to help friends with the turkeys at Xmas. Kids were detailed according to their strengths.

Caroline always gutted the pigeons and ducks. Melissa who had the smallest fingers was detailed to errrrr clear the bum with Vaseline on the lambs and goats after they were born. Son used to muck out the pigs as he was the strongest.

my Dad was a poacher during the war so I was brought up on pheasant, pigeon, rabbit and hare - but never saw them alive - downside was that at the end of every meal there was a little row of lead pellets on the side of the plate - must have swallowed some along the way, but I'm still here so no harm done eh!
