I have been a member for about a year and a half when I anted to find out if I was related to a Northern Irish actor! No joy on that front and the leads on my ancestors dried up on the free info sites so I started to look around about four or five months ago.

I generally look to see if I can do anything in my tree or contact any possible matches and then have a nosey on chat. I have posted a few times but am wanting to keep reading so I get a feel for who is nice and who is nasty so I can choose who to chat to without others thinking that I am in cahoots or condoning any poor behavior. I have read a lot about 'problems' but haven't actually seen any yet so am quite wary.

I am looking forward to feeling like I can chat away and not be worried about it.

Oh Nicky,

You should not be afraid of posting on here, I do know what you mean though,..... took me a long time before I joined in on chat.
Does worry me a bit when things kick off on here, it may make members wary of posting, but the majority of people on here are lovely, so join in :O)

Yeah. As you can see I am building confidence. I think it is safe to go on big threads and threads started by the ones I see are nice. So I will start there so they can delete any nasties as I don't know how to start a thread or delete nasty comments.

Thanks for the reply Sheila.

Nicky,

Pick which board you want to start a thread on... click onto it at the top of the page it then says add topic , click onto there and add your heading , then under it your comments :O)
if you need to edit ot delete it ,when your thread comes up you will see in your first box an option to do this :O)

Good Luck! if you need any help come back on here and ask, we are glad to help :O)

ta Sheila.

Maybe soon. I think it will be like graduating or something especially if nice people actually post on it.

Thanks again,
Nikyy

Have been a member for three years now, first posted on Records and Tips then ventured onto General and now I often visit Chat but do not post on it much as everyone seems to know each other and as I have not as yet been to any meets I still feel like a bit of an outsider

One persons nice is another persons nasty.

which is why this outdated old fashioned board needs to be moderated - there are members who can't be trusted to stay civil and act in a civilised manner. A naughty step is required.

:-)

Pat,

Join in, we all had to get to know each other on here, I knew a lot of names from just reading these threads before I joined in.
Like most people felt a bit of a thread killer at first, was worried it was a bit of a click, but most people are really friendly on here.

Evening Elrick,

There are moderators on here, there is the young trainee with his finger on the whoosh button ;O)

Hello - I have been with Genes for just over a year, mainly using the trying to find, records and tips boards initially. Late last year started to try Gen. and Chat, and almost immediately got into a spat. This was down to my own ignorance of how things 'worked'. I didn't go on again until recently,as it made me feel very uncomfortable. I got embroiled in a post that turned nasty yesterday, just by asking a perfectly reasonable question, that was not pointed in anyway. I was told by another poster, not the thread owner, that I was "always turning up on these threads". It does put you off, but not all threads and people are like that though. I have seen people leave in my short time here, but this could be for very differing reasons.

Hi Julie

I know I saw the thread ....... maybe they where confusing you with someone else, as I have several Julie's in my contacts :O)

Do not let if put you of though, this is a public forum, and the name on this board is chat, so feel free to join in, I welcome everyone's points of view on here ;O) as long as it stays friendly ;O)

Thanks Sheila, yes I know there are quite a few Julies/Julias/Jules,that's why I now put"in Derbyshire" after me name,to try and avoid confusion. I have generally been able to join in some very hilarious threads, particularly those of Hayley and Eldrick, and as you say, it is a public forum. Speak soon
