I'm the same as you, Purple -- I don't give out personal info willy nilly that anyone in the world could then see. We all have our own reasons!

Uzzi and DIZZI (I'm a poet) ... I don't understand either post, I'm afraid.

Uzzi seems to have posted on a thread s/he isn't interested in.

DIZZI -- if I google:

genesreunited kathrynb (or kathryn b)

it comes up with a sampling of thank-you posts to me on the success board, but certainly not my real name. -- ?

Kathryn, I realised how I had to fill in the boxes a long time ago but when I first came on here I still had my real name up.
Not that I have anything bad to hide, but because I am sometimes too open about my life etc I don't want just anyone coming on to read the threads and recognising me. Don't mean people on here, cos many of them know my real name and address from sending donations etc when I did a collection and other things, but newcomers to the board might be my neighbour or someone I know from outside who I wouldn't necessarily tell all my personal stuff to, hence the change.

Reading the post about hot matches etc and Mr Smith becoming Mr Bloggs so not a match, doesn't mean a thing. I am in contact with people who are linked to my family but don't necessarily have the same surname now, through marriage etc the surname will be different in many instances, so you have to dig deeper sometimes to find out which part of the family the person might be linked to.

Most of the things I do on here and with the computer on any site, is found out by trial and error lol

Ha, yeah, the actual problem is that it *does* allow blank PMs.

I can't tell you how many PMs I've got from newbies who haven't figured out they're supposed to reply to TTF posts in their threads, and also haven't figured out the PM system

Just changed mine.

I know, Bob -- here's what I do.

If I get a hot match and I want to know who the person with the match in his/her tree is, I go do a tree search for the person in the tree.

When I see the name of the person I have a match with, I click on the contact button, and get the full name.

... Okay, actually, here's something I don't know.

If I'm

given name KathrynB
surname (in.Canada)

in that account info, what do I show up as in the list of tree owners on a search?

You used to show up in your own searches, which I found quite convenient, and now you don't.

So Bob, was that PM incomplete, or just a test?

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 27 Jun 2008 23:24

another thing that irks.......in hot matches, for example.. "if Joe is a relative, send him a message." so you send Joe a message and THEN it shows you the surname.........you THEN find out that Joe is Smith. and not the Bloggs you hoped it would be........could've saved you a message.........

It was the Gr user`s name,

JaneyCanuck Report 27 Jun 2008 22:09

Hmm, Rosalyn -- if the GR user's name was "M", then that wouldn't matter, because you often can't tell from somebody's name whether they're related to you anyhow!

If the matched person's name was "M" ... well, with this place, I've ceased to be surprised. ;)

CATHKIN Report 27 Jun 2008 20:34

I had a hot match --name "M"--I don`t know if they are related to me -what good is that ?

I changed mine a while ago when there was a glitch and everyone in my contacts could view my tree.

I havent long changed from my real first name to my board name though but there was a time that it caused so much confusion that someone pm'd me thinking I was someone else and was actually slagging me off to myself lol

Oh the fun we have on here ;o)

Hi Kathryn and everyone

Haven't time to read all this... got as far as page 3 and hubby has come home... how very inconsiderate, lol ;¬))

However.... when it comes up for renewal, or anytime GR wants to contact you, they will use whatever you have put into you account name, christian, birthname, married name.... they sent my reminder to Daff, and also my hotmatches etc. I think I am now Daff (first name) Ann (surname) lol

Bet that is clear as mud... but must go... hubby is armed with a bottle of red stuff, lol!!

Love

Daff xxx

(who is feeling very clever cos I knew about this last year and even pm'd people to let them know.... happened when the boards altered last July) xxxxx

*Huge smile* xxx

Oh, I don't mind name changes! I just pay no attention. ;)

As long as when you change your name, you change it all the way!

When I'm talking to Hobby Horse in a thread, and then I get a message from Jane Smith, whose board name happens to be Hobby Horse but I don't know that Hobby Horse is Jane Smith, I don't have a chance!
