Yes, John Edwards is quite good, no doubt about it.

But let me put this to you.....when you watch a stage magician or mentalist - derren brown - paul daniels - david blaine - whoever.....do you think they are performing 'real magic'? No, of course not. They are stage magicians.

So why is there any reason to think that the tricks staged by Edwards and others are anything other than that?

There is only one reason - and that is because he tells you he is psychic :-)

Eldrick, it is time for you to see the Magic video and you will believe in true magic!!

I will pm you the link!!

Eldrick Report 28 Jun 2008 11:10

Please do :-)

I can do real magic myself, actually.

Last night, for instance...one moment I was in the pub....the next I am waking up on the settee in my house and its daylight! How magic is that!

Magic is real................Father Christmas comes to our house every single year, and the Toothfairy is alive and well in our house too.

Or is that just just an illusion?

*worries*

Hi Whirley - thansk for that clip. I am gobsmacked. Can't believe it.

I've watched it 57 times now and I still can't see how it's done....absolutely brilliant.

Now thats what I call magic!

Again, curiosity not criticism Eldrick. Do psychics, mediums, clairvoyants etc. make you angry or do they just irritate you? I admit to feeling annoyed with fakes who feed off the the distress of others.

I have no problem with spiritualists etc....who go quietly about their beliefs and don't try to make outrageous claims or charge lots of money. Each to their own.

I have nothing but deep contempt for the stage/celebrity ones who aren't good enough to be magicians or illusionists or mentalists, so they peddle their wares as psychics or mediums.

And any other one that takes money. Parasites.

The reasons are personal, though :-)

Well, surprise! surprise! I agree wholeheartedly with you, Eldrick. As I said on your other thread, I do think that there are some people who are more sensitive or aware than others but I really have no time for the stage mediums. Still each to their own.

I know many of these people and they are fakes. However, I would say that they serve a useful, if doubtful, purpose.
They rarely peddle bad news and usually give slighly uplifting messages (?), which is good for the client.

I have told this story before. Our magic club hosted a pair of well knoiwn psychic, mind reading entertainers and they explained their fakery in detail.
The silly part is that afterwards, most of the women in the audience formed a queue to have their hands read, etc. Plainly there is an in-built need.

I have to agree with Harry. Most people go to see these shows with an open mind anyway, and accept that they are entertainers. If people go home from these shows feeling better than they went, what's the harm?

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 28 Jun 2008 12:25

Interesting, Harry. I think it's the money making that annoys me. However, supply and demand.

I see the point, Maggy, and I do agree to a point - where is the harm. However, what about people who are distressed and desperate for a sign from a loved one. It seems cruel to fool these people.

Sue,
Take your point, but there is a saying - "when you have nothing, hope is everything"

I think a lot of the time, if people go away feeling comforted, that is OK - as I say, belief is personal. Where it becomes truly despicable is illustrated in a case I had involvement in.

A mother had lost a child under circumstances that led her to believe (wrongly) that she could have prevented it.

She started to visit mediums and found one that said the right things.

£25,000 later and a broken marriage, it came into the open and her husband involved us.

Words cannot express the utter contempt I have for that 'medium'. That is where it becomes harmful.

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 28 Jun 2008 13:01

So it is personal experience that has formed your opinion. Fair enough and I think I would feel the same contempt under those circumstances.
