Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 29 Jun 2008 21:00

My mother always told me that dogs are not allowed to eat pork. Now while I don't feed my dog pork I just wondered if there's any truth in this or whether it's just an old wives' tale (sorry mum!).

Anyone have any ideas?

We give ours pork scraps sometimes and she seems fine with it.

Just googled and as long as it is well cooked it's fine, but raw pork can contain a worm that is dangerous to humans and animals.

never ever heard that one - any dogs we've had always were given any meat scraps including pork, which we had more often than any other meat! Our old bull terrier practically lived on pork sausages

I've had the odd occasion when the pooch has nicked a bit of bacon rind - no reaction or anything. But there must have been some sort of truth behind it mustn't there?

worms! that would make sense. But is that confined just to pork? Would explain it if it was ....

You never see cans of pet food that say " with pork " on them.

We give ours the odd bit of pork scraps but not very often.

think I'm right, but sure someone will pull me up on it if I've got it wrong!! I love pork and have never had a problem with it - used to be years ago "don't eat it if there's not an R in the month or something like that" but that was in the days before we all had refrigerators

I've seen worms in fresh fish - just ordinary worms which are apparently in the fish to keep them clean!! not my idea of cleanliness though!!

I don't touch shellfish as they all eat sewage and stuff.................I think, but I do love my cod, tuna and plaice.

But worms????? Yuk yuk yuk!!

I think it comes from when dogs were commonly given raw meat.

Pork was well known to give you a tape worm if it was undercooked.

People gave their dogs raw meat (steak etc) rather than cooked meat. In fact weaning pups shouldn't be given cooked meat but minced raw steak. So I think that's where it comes from.

It's all making sense now. But it is odd that they don't put pork in dog food. If it's cooked it should be OK.

Weird.

And worms in fish! Gross!!

I eat much more fish than meat but I'm not sure I want to now!

Thank you everyone. Food for thought!

All I can say Jill is.....my Sis and BiL left us with their precious Sheltie for the weekend, years ago, to go to Centre Parks....

Lass was on this strict diet of a slice of this special tinned dog food, twice a day........well, I had this pork left over......quite a lot really......and I felt really sorry for her....

Upshot was the next day she had chronic diahorrea (sp) and they had to take her to the vets......my Sis told me years later that it had cost a bomb to get her right again......she never said anything at the time though.....

Oh Kitty

Join me and become one of these new-agey vegetarian type people! We could have a laugh.

I know if I became a vegetarian I'd fart a hell of a lot more than I do now!! Be careful everyone - fart alert!
