I would, but having flown there and back 3 times last year my bank balance won't allow me to for now!

Deb, yer not supposed to wish yrself happy birthday. ;)

But what the heck, happy birthday to us too!

141 is it then?! And we look so young.

Now if I can ever prove the connection between that mysterious gr-grfather (non)Monck of mine and the Viscount who presided over the birth ...

(That's right -- I left that bit out of the Vice-Regal thread! The Governor General hand picked by Queen Vic to preside over Confederation, which took place in 1867, was Viscount Monck, whose black sheep younger brother ... or uncle ... may or may not be responsible for me being here ...)

Hope you all have an enjoyable Canada day.

Kathryn - interesting possibility; good luck with the proof.

Connections with "famous" people in history make for fascinating research. :-)

Much like my OH's General Hale who did something over your way with a Wolfe person!

As you can see I had sparse historical education.

In fact I think I shall go Google.

Once again, enjoy your special day, Canadians.

:-))

Report back, Jen. I know who the Wolfe person is ...

In fact, I was quite fond of the song about him that we learned back in the good old days of Empire.

In days of yore
from Britain's shore
OAF the dauntless hero came
and planted firm
Britannia's flag
o-on Canada's fair domain.

Well, that's how I was belting it out in the back of the station wagon one day in 1958, until my mother turned around and said "Who???"

Really Dawnie? our flag? How very cool! Is this done all over? And for other Commonwealth national days? That could get a bit burdensome ... ;)

Do you know is it in honour of a fellow Commonwealth nation / former colony, or more specific, like how we came to your defence 3 years before the lazy yanks did back in '39?

Very interesting, thanks for that tidbit!

Kathryn

Our Head had a flagpole erected at the front of the school and the flag is changed for all sorts of things. He has just got the american flag ready for Friday which is also our summer fayre day so the children will be dressed in american theme costumes as well.

Know I look each day to see what flag is up.

Oh, well, took the wind out of that flag, that did. The yanks get not only equal treatment, but better. ;)

Oh well, they're just another former colony too!

Enjoy your National birthday.

The day will be remembered locally here, as it is every year..........

Shorncliffe Military Cemetery,
Folkestone.

The Canada Day Service commemorates the 296 Canadian soldiers who died during WWI and are buried in the Shorncliffe Military Cemetery.

It is marked each year by a service and the attendance of local school children laying their own floral tributes on the graves of the soldiers.

Happy Canada Day.

Thinking of my distant cousin, Margaret Kayes, nee Jupp, formerly Nesbitt, who, nearly 100 years ago, travelled from England - what a journey that must have been! - and helped form Rock Creek.
