Hello Jill in Kent - I wouldn't exactly call my self a newbie as such, but still not versed in everything. I only bought my lap-top last spring,and joined Genes in the middle of last year. At first I just used TTF,Tips and Records. For a while I didn't realise the significance of General and Chat, and also admit that I upset someone early on because I didn't realise how everything' worked' After all, the site doesn't come with a 'how to do' manuel. I do buy pay-to- view vouchers for Ancestry, and have sent for my fair share of certificates,wills and maps. But, and it is a big but, I wouldn't call myself experienced either. This goes for both genealogy and the technicalities of using the computer, so I read all threads, and hope to learn 'on the hoof' as they say.
Best Regards
Julia in Derbyshire

I think it must be me then - I will try and be a bit more patient in future!!

Ann in Glos - I do have a note of a "find this when in County Hall" case somewhere - so that may be yours. My time there is patchy so please bear with me. (I work full-time and occasionally work there but sometimes do not manage a lunch break so do not have the time to pop into the Records Office.) Apologies - have not forgotten you.

I am not sure how long I had been a 'member' before I discovered the boards, but I think we had to subscribe to play on the boards didnt we? and I was a non-subscriber initially.
I like to take things a step at a time. Dont rush things like a bull at a gate. I bought a digital camera a couple of months ago and still havent used many of the things on it, I mainly point and shoot although I have done some macro and super macro shots. Must try something new with it some time. Need to read the book again first though.
Huia.

I found the general topics board way too soon so my research is very patchy and haven't got far back at all.
I blame it on you lot and the ones who have left,they used to keep me talking all night lol

I was a member for two years before I realized there were discussion boards ... did tree searches, met cousins, checked out those hot matches (aha, a new batch awaits me). Didn't post until less than a year ago.

Maybe there are others as dim as I ...

Jill, was it you who was maybe going to get to find out about my John Little for me? I know it was a Jill, and it was Kent but i don't seem to have heard any more. if it was you and you have not been able to get there please don't worry. No problem, he has been a mystery for so long now a bit longer wont hurt. Or was it the birth of Sarah Little? a couple of months now can't remember, both a mystery.

Claire - yes - but the ones who don't want to pay out for anything make themselves known fairly early on. I always try to get certs for direct lines and have managed to in most cases (damn you granddad!) but I don't worry too much about siblings, uncles etc, so I do understand the odd request asking for help when there is no direct link. But when it's their grandparents! I mean, they will need the evidence won't they?

Perhaps it's just me being a bit uncharitable then! I find though that I'm reasonably happy helping the genuine newbies but I do get a bit impatient with the older newbies!

I think I'm having one of those days today!

Off to have dinner in the garden with his nibs - who is all clammy from tennis - yuk!

Think we have a bit of a mixture, some are Newbies with very old numbers but they've not got around to doing any work & others are just trying to do a tree without spending any money, time or effort!!!!!!!!!!!!

The there are others who just take ages before they find the boards

~~~~~~waves to Teresa, that is what happened with me.
But I have to agree with you Jill and say that recently I have seen a few people who say they are newbies, and asking for very basic research help, who have numbers about 2 or 3 years old!!
I do think that when one or two take the ww, it makes it more difficult for genuine newbies...... and some with older numbers may well have started, then put the tree away for a while for whatever reason, I know!
Maybe they have been researching all this time but have not posted on the boards? In that sense they are new...to the boards.
....
Is it just me? I assume that when someone says they are new to this that their ref no. will start with an 8 or maybe a 9 and be a long number. So, why is that some "newbies" have a really old number? Is it just that they joined umpteen millions of years ago and have not done any research until now or is it some other reason?
Maybe I'm getting a bit paranoid ... bring out the men with white coats!
