having trouble with tin openers these days. Used to be able to open tins without problems but lately I've tried three different types of tin opener and just can't get anywhere with them.
Its not my wrists or my hands, i think they've made the rims shorter so the opener can't get a grip.
If anyone has a foolproof tin opener I'd ;love to know what it is and where you got it from (I'm starving here!!)

Some of them are worse than useless and I absolutely hate the ones that open tins round the top of the sides rather than inside the rim.
The tins are lethal then if you want to rinse to recycle.

I've just had a look at our opener, which works well but can't see a name on it. It might have come from Tesco. It's the metal sort that opens a bit like scissors. This has black rubber? handles and cuts clean and smooth.

If its the one I think Gwyn, I've got that one. my husband manages with that but it dosen't seem to work with me.
I've seen some for sale that are battery operated and you just put them on top of the tin. I did wonder if that was worth trying but bit expensive if it dosen't do the trick

If you Google search there are some online comments about which ones people have found suitable.

Jenny,

We bought one of the battery operated ones, which you just sit on top of the can, for Mum-in-law, aged almost 91, and she finds it wonderful.

.....I have just googled Brabantia and those tin openers look nothing like mine, so mine must be out of date.....

Although we have one, I agree the battery operated ones are lethal.
It does seems to have become more difficult to get a good, well-functioning hand operated opener unless, as suggested, tin designs have changed.

I've got the OneTouch one, too - they are brilliant. I have always had trouble with tin openers because when I was born I was starved of oxygen and so don't have full use of my left hand. (It's like my brain sends the message but it doesn't get there.)

So I always struggle with normal tin openers because whichever way round I hold them, I either can't keep the handles together or can't turn it (also if the handles are too thick my hand's too small to get a proper grip) but the OneTouch one is great - I can just set it going and leave it!

You've pre empted me, I was just about to ask if it was the One touch opener as I've just seen it in the Argos catalogue.
There were some electric ones in there as well which were cheaper - anyone had experience of those

whoops - just read the thread again, i'd asked if anyone had used the electric can openers but I must have got side tracked and put it on another thread - I bet thats caused some head scratching!

I have success with electric openers, but OH cant stand them. He uses the one which cuts the top off around the side. Jean

I still prefer the old fashioned ones with a sort of butterfly key on the top to turn it round. They are so cheap and as some have said, don't leave that dangerously sharp edge at the top.

Is there anyone else who hates these ring pull cans? I find them really hard to open, even with the help of a spoon handle or similar to pull the ring up and back.
Usually manage to spill the cotents of the tin.
