Does anyone have any information on this? I've tried googling today to see what I could find out, but haven't been able to find anything.

I had a rather distressing conversation with 3 teenagers about this at 1am last night/this morning, and I want to know what I'm talking about before I open my mouth.

I tried to explain to these girls what I personally know about suicide in general, as I've been a direct victim (for want of a better word) of this, my 34 year old brother took his own life 13 years ago, so I understand the consequences.

I know this is a really difficult subject to broach, but I'm at a loss this morning as to where to look, and I'd appreciate any ideas that may help.

Yeah, I know all about the "emo" thing. On a less serious note, we call my son emo-boy, and my daughter che-mo, she's a cross between emo & chav! Hahaha!

There seems to be some kinda spiritual connection, which makes me just want to bash my head against the wall, it's all very confusing to be honest, but it's concerned me enough to try to find out what's going on.

Teenagers are pretty vulnerable emotionally anyway, without all this other cr*ap adding to their woes.

Have also had problems with the "emo" cult that seems to be entreing High Schools all over, from what I can deduce from my daughter self harm and suicide seem to be the goal.Thankfully it seems to be dieing down a little here .

Emo.....stemming from the music genre that has become known as Emotional Rock......bands like My Chemical Romance and similar artists led the way. I have to point out that not every teenager who claims to be Emo will self harm or consider suicide for some it is simply a way to blend in. I myself am 20 years old and so lived through the first sproutings of this Emo trend. The suicide cults are a whole different thing and i think that labelling every teenager who is an Emo as some one mentally vulnerable/unstable is a little harsh. Suicide and self harm has become a trend but i wouldnt blame the music/dress sense because everyone has a mind...people make choices. Some just make the wrong ones. I myself lost a dear friend in April, he hung himself. He was not Emo.
What i am trying to say is that i dont think the suicide cults have very much to do with the Emo trends of the moment. Sure some people will blame this as it can seem rather dark and sinister but i feel things like size zero models and terrible self image are things that should be blamed. It is the girls and guys who feel they have to fit in that join these groups. The ones whose self esteem is low and their sense of any self worth completely gone. Perhaps we should look a little closer to home....how are they treated at home? By parents/siblings? How is their school life? Do they have lots of friends or are they painfully quiet and a bit of a loner?
So many questions and i dont think their dress sense and music preferances is one of them

Hi Lou thanks for the info ...........unfortunatly it would seem the children here are associating emo in a different way from how you say it is .

Some of the young people in my youth theatre group would describe themselves as emo but I wouldn't describe them as suicidal at all. They appreciate a particular genre of music and like to dress in a certain way.

I'm pretty sure that if I was their age I'd be Emo or Goth as well.

It's just a youth grouping thing - like mods and rockers of the 60s, I don't see anything sinister in their behaviour at all.

I don't see anything sinister in how lou discribes it either .But it would seem that teens here are useing the word Emo and have a differant understanding of what it means .

Yep, couldn't agree more Lou & Gwynne. I think it's pretty ridiculous to say that a certain type of music or dress code makes you act in a certain way. Every generation has some kind of group that teenagers etc will belong to. I myself, got into the whole Mod-revival thing in 1979 to about 1985.

My son gets abuse hurled at him by a group of kids that live near us, because he has long hair, and listens to rock music. Apparently that makes him a "greebo"...My daughter is gay, they yell stuff about her sexuality, she's not particularly bothered. She says that if they shouted at her, saying that she was a goat-worrier :o) (her words, not mine!) she might be upset, but as they're only stating the truth, she doesn't care.

As I mentioned before, I know and understand the whole emo-thing, what I really wanted to see was, if anyone knew anything about the suicide cult that my daughter's friend was talking about, as I hadn't heard of it myself.
