WW2 Army Uniform Badges

Good morning everyone,
I am looking at a photograph of my Dad in his Army Uniform.
The badge at the top of his right arm reads Royal Engineers (I think) and under that is a badge with what looks like a polar bear on it underneath that is a badge with the number 49.
Anyone any ideas as to what these badges are or anyone know a good web site I could try.

I wish he was still here to ask

Thanks for this thread, from the links I have located my Dad's army badge......56th Black Cat London Division.....he was a signaller....

Hi Sally,
Its great when a thread is usefull for others as well as the person who started it.
I now also know that my Dad was in the Royal Engineers 49th Division (the polar bear was because they went to Iceland)
now I must send for his service record

Pat, my Dad was always saying he could remember his army number, and now and again would just rattle it off........how I wish I had written it down....

I have his medals but his number is not on them......I have his father's naval war medals from WW1 and his number is on the back......

Could you let me know how I would get his records without knowing his army number......thanks.....sally

I got the web site from another thread on these boards
My Dad was also always talking about his time in the army and I have his medals and I also had his pass book but cannot find that, I have turned the house upside down.

Thanks Pat......I had his army red pay book from which I found out where he had been......he would not readily talk about the war.....too many bad memories........after some nagging he sent for his medals (which he didn't want after the war?)......but it got lost somewhere.......we could not find it after he passed 2 years ago.......like you we searched everywhere......a mystery.....

I will go to the website and see what it can do for me.....thank you Pat.....x sally
