Mrs. Blue Eyes Report 9 Jul 2008 13:46

My wedding photographer has just phoned up, 2 weeks ago he had his car taken and it contained his photography equipment, the police found his car, but guess what !! yep easy one really his equipment is gone, and it gets worse........ because he had left it unlocked his insurers are refusing to pay out to replace it.
I now no longer have a photographer for my wedding in 8 1/2 weeks time..
The really bummy thing is, his photos were going to be free and I'm not sure we can swing extra money to cover another one....

Gonna go off and number crunch..

Do you have an amatuer photography group in your area. My brother in law is a member of one and I was abit dubius at first as I wanted nice photos and I wasn't sure of his photographic capabilities, but on the day he turned up with 2 of his mates and they did a beautiful job, I couldn't have asked for better photos and they didn't charge me a penny they just did it for the experience.

How awful for you (and for him too!)
I hope you manage to find a replacement that you can afford in time.
Weddings scare me - too much to organise! Good luck.

Hiya Blue Eyes... I was going to suggest the same as GG.... but also, what about asking at the nearest college that has a photography course as part of it's prospectus? You may still have to pay... but not an astronomical amount!

ps, does young Kate on GR live near you???? She is just starting her own business, so might be interested???? and of course, she would have the advertising when you post on the web, lol!!

I am not sure if she does weddings.... but you could pm her and find out?

A friend of mine was strapped for cash, so asked everyone for copies of the photo's they had taken...they were great and cost nothing.

Debbie Report 9 Jul 2008 14:02

at our evening reception we put a disposable camera on every table and let the guests take the photos - they were just left on the tables for us to collect at the end of the evening. Had some great photos of guests that I would have never had got - also got quite few pics of feet and fingers though.

Thanks guys, It's a bit of a pain to have to start looking again, but to be honest I thought I would stress if somethin went awry and I'm not, in the end I'll still be marrying my man.
I will try following the suggestions of contacting the colleges near me.
Daff (you sweetie) I live near Portsmouth in Hampshire do you know where Kate lives??

Eldrick honey, I decided not to buy the "Jessica Rabbit" dress (didn't wanna scare the Vicar) still wanna snap xx lol

ps don't you live way way way up north in this fine green and rather wet country

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 9 Jul 2008 14:32

Yea, way up north. But I was prepared, for a fellow GR member, to make the long trip to the south.

But since I was turned down so mercilessly, I have accepted a commission to do a society wedding with a Dr Finlays' Casebook theme.

But if you just want to send me photos of everyones faces, I can digitally superimpose them over any other wedding that I have in my portfolio, including the Ice Wedding in Alaska that I did last year.

:-)

The fee would obviously not be large.

do you not have any friends who are enthusuastic amateurs photographer's. A couple of years ago i took the photos for a friend's son's wedding and they were very pleased with them.. all I charged them for was the films (pre digital.) It was nerve wracking for me though worrying they would not be OK!!

At another wedding the photographers photos were so bad that the couple contacted all of us who took photos and had those instead because they were better.

The flip side to this is, in 1981 when my daughter married her first husband a friend of mine took photos and used a new flash gun for the first time and the photos were awful.

but if you know somebody with a good digital who knows the basics about wedding photography it might be a thought.

Kate Report 9 Jul 2008 16:56

I'm in the north west - is that any good? (I admit I've never actually photographed a wedding yet but I did take some unofficial ones at my cousin's wedding about three years back.)

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 9 Jul 2008 17:00

I would love to *have a bash* and I have taken some excellent photos.... digital and proper film, lol! But a wedding is far too big a project....

although my dil 's twin is getting married end of August, they have a posh photographer, but have asked me to prowl the prowl and get the candid ones, lol I am also supposed to be looking after my granddaughter, too.. and her half Spanish younger cousin....... could be very interesting, this could, lol!!

Eldrick Report 9 Jul 2008 17:07

Joking apart, I do lots of weddings - well, about 10 a year.....and unless you are well up on the use of flash, diffusers, light angles (never stand the subject in the sun at mid day!) and are confident and loud enough to order people around and make snap decisions - forget it! It will lead to tears.

You find there is ALWAYS one well meaning guest who insists that the sun should be over the photographers left shoulder and tuts away when you put people in the shade of trees and then use flash - and when you take your time to get the right incident light reading (internal light meters are poor at getting the right average when you have a bright white dress and a jet black suit!) you get the guests getting in the way with their phone cameras and little compacts.....

It tests the patience of a saint!

lol

But if you can do all this, wedding photography is rewarding and fun. I thoroughly enjoy doing it.

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 9 Jul 2008 17:16

lol Eldrick... I have been photographers assistant... uncle was a professional, although not weddings at all..... unless they were family ones. I inherited much of his stuff.... can't make head nor tail of some of it, lol... so I wouldn't in my wildest dreams offer myself as *the photographer* at a wedding... but I am a pretty useful backing singer, lol!!

I signed up for a degree course... would just about have finished it now..... but became ill so withdrew. There was a second reason, lol....the one and only neighbour I don't get on with is a post graduate tutor on the course!! Ugh!!
