I was hoping you would put up the article Merlin because my FiL was taking Warfarin and my Dad was due to take it ..... but he had a major stroke....

A businessman died from a brain haemorrhage as a result of heading the ball during a veterans' soccer match.

David Belk, 50, complained of a stiff neck and a headache soon after the Sunday game.

By the Wednesday, the pain was so bad that his wife took him to hospital.

He died a week later and a postmortem examination found the header had caused a tiny tear in a blood vessel.

An inquest heard it was 'a tragic jigsaw of events'.

Mr Belk, father of two grown-up children, had had a heart pacemaker fitted ten years earlier and was taking the blood-thinning agent Warfarin, which can lead to weakening of blood vessels in the head.

His widow Sheila, a 48-year-old medical receptionist, said he had been determined not to let his heart condition stop him living life to the full.


As well as football, he played golf and went skiing.

Mr Belk, the commercial director of a construction firm, had been a leading player with Poynton FC, near his home in Macclesfield, Cheshire, for many years, and was playing for their Higher Poynton Veterans team on October 7 last year.


Consultant neurosurgeon Ajit Sofat told the Macclesfield inquest the Warfarin effect was probably the cause of Mr Belk's death, although he could not say for sure.

Even if he had been taken to hospital immediately, he could not have been saved.

Dr Janet Napier, deputy coroner for Cheshire, recorded a narrative verdict of death due to a brain injury brought on by trauma and a condition affecting Mr Belk's blood vessels.

The British Heart Foundation says anyone taking Warfarin is strongly advised not to engage in contact sports and should consult their doctor about alternative ways of keeping active.
