On what Dr Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury says about sharia law seeming to be unavoidable in the UK? |

Absoluyly Muffy. OH and i have been very fortunate to live and work in a variety of countries in the world. we have always abided by their laws --and would not dream of flouting them--- in alot of countries you are damned if you try. |

Initially when this debate first came about, the archbishop said in an interview, that he wasn't about to ask for the introduction of Sharia law into this country, as a separate law for Muslims, but for our own lawmakers, when pushing forward for new legislation, to take into account Sharia law. Is he not saying that still? |

Hard to know where he stands on it now TW ...... after his speech he seems to have gone down the *taken out of context* route. His fellow churchmen though don't see it like that at all and read it the same way as many others judging from their reactions to it xx |

Teresa, Muffy's link was to the original news report back in February, so I don't think anything has changed! |

I think the law was made for the country as in everyone in it abides by it. I disagree with overseas elements being placed within the law ... spoken in a different language and slowly taking away England's credibility to make the country safe and law abiding. |

Gill.....I don't know much about Sharia Law, but surely only elements of it would be brought in to work alongside our existing laws................so I don't really see how it would take away "England's credibility to make the country safe and law abiding" |

I think it will.........it's just something I feel about this, perhaps it was because I watched that awful docu video where a young 8 year old was caught steaking a sweet....it took all those grown men to keep him in place while a jeep ran over his arm and crushed it..so he couldn't do it again. I cried then and I cry now thinking of that little boys face. |

Do you really think that sort of extreme punishment would be allowed here? |

I agree Joy, and do not think sharia law should be adopted in any way, just my opinion of course and NOT racist. |

Joy I think you might find that female circumcision has already been legislated against... I worked a number of years ago with a community group where this practice was the norm.... there has been an amendment to an existing law to combat it.... I also have to say some very very brave women who were victims were instrumental in bringing this about. |

Interesting. As our laws are enacted by 'The Lords, spiritual and temporal' meaning the christian bishops in the house of lords....how could a bishop remain true to his faith (only one god) whilst assenting to a law apertaining to another faith......thereby acknowledging that there is another God who must be just as powerful...... |

Muffyxx | Report | 18 Jul 2008 18:21 |
Have to say I'm in complete agreement with Eldrick there xx |
