Maria,

Woman after my own heart!!

My baby is 3 and 4 months and he puts his pj's under his pillow and LIKES to help empty the dish washer!!

I will bail out although this rarely happens. My son lost his mobile and I suppose more for my own sake than his, I bought a £10 one for him. As he is in the UK and I am here in Ireland I feel the need to be able to check up on him..............................that is if he hasnt lost this one as well (see my thread' anyone in southampton'!!) lol

love Theresa

Thanks for all your replies. Malc does seem them and take them out as well. His son has just rung and asked Malc to lend him £20 so he can go out!! It is his birthday next week and he is expecting at least £50.00 if not more. It just seems never ending and as we are on a low income, we are struggling to make ends meet without extra demands.

I agree with all of you. I stopped getting pocket money as soon as I got a job at 17, it was only a YTS at first but my Mam still took board off me as she said she wouldn't be doing me any favours and we all need to learn that life isn't free. I'm so glad she did now. although at the time I could have done with the money.
I think it would be fair if the younger one got some for a bit longer so as not to be getting less than her brother.

i think if they are earning the pocket money stops, my daughter gets 40 a month and out of that she has to buy clothes and top her phone up, she gets about the same off her dad, actually that is not bad going for a 14 year old 80 pound a month. she thinks i am mean and her dad should give her more.

my son gets 20 a month of me and 20 off his dad, the funny thing is there father and i dont live together and dont get on and in one conversation i said how much i gave the kids and he was gobsmacked coz they claimed i gave them nothing i was livied.

my youngest daughter gets no pocket money till she starts senior school, but whatever she asks for she usually gets.

plus the older kids get a fiver each week each to spend on food etc at school.

my bf on the other hand gives his son 15 a week and his nephew who is working gets a tenner everyweek and train fare home to see parendts every week for couple of days,

i think the kids are better off than us and we are not well off.

My pocket money stopped as soon as I had a job, and then I had to pay a percent to mum, each week. Cant remember how much - it was quite a few years ago, now.

This is going to come out all wrong but I'll give it a go anyway......

This isn't just about pocket money is it?

From other threads it seems like these kids always get their own way and have no respect or consideration for Malc. You can't blame them for trying it on if Malc always gives in.

Theresa's kids may seem like angels in comparison but she's clearly set out boundaries, rules and consequences from the get go and her children are well mannered kids for it. They respect her and are conscientious.

From the few threads I've seen, it seems like Malc's 2 are spoilt.

If parents give in to every request they'll just keep doing it and you'll never gain their respect. Malc's the one who should be calling the shots, not them. He needs sit back, and to have a look at what's going on and start with a new set of rules with these two. You can't buy love.

Rose and all,

my kids are good.....I know that.

Bless them I probably dont tell them enough.

But then they know how difficult life has been for us. For many years we survived on about £35 a week for food for me and 4 kids. Its funny because I was a better saver when I was on benefits! We also ran our own business which meant the kids sleeping in our wrk place 2 nights a week.

When my OH joined us properly things were harder but we were very lucky (something my OH cannot see at all). We have gone from a 4 bed tiny council house to a 5 bed bungalow on an acre of land because of my saving and the fact my mum gave us the land. I so hope the kids picked up on that. I know my 18yo has, she is very shrewd and determined and I so hope that her dreams are not swerved by love, although that must be the best reason.

For us the next 4 years are going to be hard work.

My OH will be supporting all of us through Uni, ( I start for 4 years in September) but in 4 years time we will be so free its unreal........................

However it has taken us years of saving and working and dreaming to get this far.

I plan to celebrate my 40th a year late when my OH celebrates his 40th. Hopefully then I will be able to buy him his dream car, a Jag!

I suppose what I am saying is that it really does not feel worth it unless you have earned it!

love Theresa

I know I'll sound like scrouge here, but as a single parent my kids got paper rounds at 13years old, and the pocket money stopped then!

These two are unbelievable !
Talk about want your cake and eat it.............
Sorry Malc and Jackie but they are walking all over you.
When my two were at secondary school they got paper rounds etc and were given their family allowance to get stuff. I still bought major items but they got no pocket money unless they earnt it !
For a ' man ' of 20 to be in full time employ and still expect pocket money !!!!! Words fail me !!!
Agree with daughter getting something until she is 18 as long as she is not working. But, I think I would be inclined to make them pay for their own phones.

As a teenager if I wanted money ( even though I came from a family who could afford to give it ) I had to go out and earn it.
Taught me the value of money and how to budget. A hard lesson but stood me in good stead when I was married !!!!

I have a heap of errands and jobs the kids can do whilst i am working they get paid. I have told them when you get out of school no one will give you money you have to earn it, I reckon pocket money is okay any age as long as they have earnt it.

Malc and Jackie - now you know what others feel - they are Malc's kids and dads are usually a soft touch. I do not know how you manage all of these treats - sounds as if you are doing without yourself. Get the feeling Malc is afraid to stop giving them goodies as if he does he will lose them. Malc you cannot buy love and if you do it is not worth having. Your son is an adult yet appears to have no pride - looking for handouts, By all means give him £20 to go out but tell him it will be his birthday present early. Tuf love Malc - then maybe they will give you some respect not easy I know. Do they buy presents at XChristmas and birthday for Malc?

We stopped pocket money as soon as ours got part-time jobs.

Out of the money they earned, they kept themselves in clothes, make-up, going out etc.

They need to learn to budget from day one of working, if not, the real world is going to swallow them whole.:))
