Buggs................well said.

Eldrick.............I agree with you too, but I would hate to see an end to the census and other records being freely available.

This seems like a money-saving scheme and absolutely nothing to do with migration shifts.

Carol, yes you are right, the Civil servants are supposed to be impartial.

Taff & George...it is not a Member of Parliment (of any party) that loses files/documents.
I am not a 'fan' the present Government...but am I not right in saying that, the Civil Servants responsible, are the same ones who will work in exactly the same position/office which ever Party is in power.

'with imagration the goverment realy dos;nt want people to no just how the population has changed
even name;s like Smith and Jones or Brown will pale into insignficant;s compard to names like Patel We;ve lost our Country Without a FightMake;sme sick'

What a load of twaddle, to be polite. Lost our country without a fight. Blame the immigrants again.

It was fine to welcome the poles, czechs, french, americans, sikhs, indians and the citizens of all the commonwealth countries that we invaded years ago, to come and fight in the 2nd (and the first) wars - yes, that was fine. No problem then. And to encourage immigration in the 50's from the Caribbean. No worries.

Now they are getting blamed for a proposal to not have a census!

No wonder the BNP is growing in power.

Too true Buggs, and so for our future generations our work, references and certificates. will indeed be historical!...will go something like..."come and see all the details GGparents used to be able to find, weren't they lucky!" lol

there is also the inference that there wont be so much ephemera because most communication is done by phone and e mail with not many letters being written. So, yes Buggs you are right.

Just a thought but perhaps the powers that be are afraid they will loose the discs that contain future censuses..............they do have a habit of "losing" peoples personal information...............lol

I think if that's true about 2011 census being the last it's absolutely ridiculous!
Surely because of migraion we should be having census taken more not less!

Perhaps the Govmt thinks we are all enjoying an inexpensive hobby that they cant tax, so they are trying to stop it! Jean

But not sure if everyone goes on there so thought you might like to see it here too.

Just read a report that, now the GRO have become part of the Identity and Passport Service (IPS), IPS has made the decision to cease uploading the birth, marriage and death indexes to the web, and that means that 2006 will be the last year of birth and death indexes to be searchable on line and 2005 the last year for marriages.
Another possible 'last' is the 2011 census. The future of further censuses is not certain as the treasury Select Committee deems the census no longer fit for purpose due to migration shifts of the population.

Pity the family historians of the future then!!!
