I would never dream of buying ready made mash.
I do buy jars of sauces though ;((.

I use a lot of fresh fruit and veg and make soup a lot.

We have always cooked from scratch since we were married in 1973. a) it is far cheaper b) you get much better food and c) you don't get overdosed with sugar and salt.

We are having a lamb roast for 4 adults today, homemade ice cream for afters.

Total cost less than £10

OK I confess,

I have used frozen mash at times. I've found it useful for the kids becuase I can do very small amounts (sometimes 1 small 2 year old sized portion) very quickly. I've tasted it to make sure I wasn't feeding them rubbish and I have to say it was fine.

I am not ashamed :o)

The suggestion of not cooking from basics ia an anethema to me, and probably many more of my generation. I am closing down now as I am cooking our Sunday evening meal. Barnsley chops with new potatoes, peas, carrots and cauliflower and mint sauce. Apart from the meat, everything off the allotment. fresh this morning. I will admit to using packet 'Smash' as a thickening agent, in soups and stews, all home made, but only because it is 95% fat free. Never loose the art.

I do cook mostly 'from scratch', but do admit to using the occasional packet mix or jar for sauces.

I couldn't believe it when I saw mashed potato & swede/carrot mash in the chiller cabinet - probably about a quarter of the portion you could make from fresh! (not to mention the additives)

I do use it very occasionally.... but I am much more a *start from scratch* person.

Every month, I make up big pots of mince, chilli and spagh bol, cook a chicken, boil the carcase, and from that have a roast, then soups/curry and/or stock, depending on size of chook. I will also make a batch of lamb or beef meals.... stew, steak and kidney, curry etc... and freeze that as well.

Every week, left over veg (raw) in fridge is boiled with herbs and a dash of salt and pepper, blended, and then put into little pots in the freezer as a stock or turned into a soup by adding meat or tomato..

Left over wine is also put into a little container, and kept in the freezer for when a meal needs an extra oomph

I do use tinned tomatoes, though, and I keep in packets just in case... they usually go back with my sons or nephews when they visit, lol.

I have a weight problem, so try to be very careful.. I like to know what fat, salt etc goes into my food. Still put on weight, though!

I do use convenience stuff sometimes, but not often.

Love
