As well as all the goats, rabbits, kanagaroos, wombats, possums, crocidiles, echidnas and koalas I eat here, I also grow and forage for Australian Mountain Pepper (Tasmanica Lanceolata) - the greatest spice known to mankind!

I also have chooks, ducks and guinea fowl and grow walnuts, chestnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, apples, pears, plums, figs, mulberries, oranges, lemons, limes, cumquats, tangellos, mandarines.

I used to work with the wife of a couple who lived off the land in Wales -in fact the wife wrote a few books.

It was hard work and they had to go and find part time work to pay for certain bills.

But you are right in that we could all live quite freely off the land. Only thing is I could not trap an animal kill it and eat it and I am not vegetarian - a bit hypocritical I know. lol

eldrick, only just seen this thread, you have taken me back to my childhood, my mother used to make elderflower champane, used to drink it by the bottle full , lovely... not now , to much sugar in it.

Yes, there is a high sugar content, but if you left it to ferment longer.....:-)

But then it would lose its fizz I suppose.

Now about this culltivating of elderflower fag bushes,L/wick....what the process,,,,,is it legal.how many fags to a bush,,,,,
but more so is it profitable,,,,,,,,,:}}

I think it is actually poisonous - the bark of the elder bush, anyway!

Some fifty years ago, my teacher used to grow his own tobacco, and smoked it in a pipe.

We grow tobacco on our allotment.........curing it is a lot of fuss as a sweat chamber has to be built etc

Oh hasn't perfected it yet and it smells a bit like wet dog when you smoke it.......it doesn't taste much either but at least it isn't loaded with nasty chemicals.
( I buy mine from the shops.............lol )

you were right Eldrick as ever - been looking for mushrooms this morning, only found three, BUT when I say only three they actually weigh one and three quarter pounds!!! I would prefer smaller ones, but these look good anyway.

Eldrick - May I offer you the first refusal on a carrier bag full of freshly picked,clean,grub free, empty pea pods. I can keep you supplied over the next few weeks with sufficient pods to make 10-20gallons of a nice light wine. Similarly, at regular intervals I can supply you with soil free beetroot boiling water, to make a nice light red, of the quantity of above. Sadly, these days, a poor digestive system precludes me from making and drinking wine. A mere tincture of Brandy taken daily, for medicinal purposes, is more to my tastes. By the way, have you ever made Pocheen.
I, also have a breadmaker I could not live without. After the bread has proved, I turn it into bread rolls, put onto a baking tray, inside a black bin liner, and put onto the patio table to rise. The bin liner creates it's own climate in the sun (when we get any).
I have just made a dish of sugar free jelly from tea bags, using up the last of our early strawberries.
Many thing can be made from 'nothing'

Now, a funny thing...if you make a wine and ferment it out with high tolerance yeast - your end product is going to be around the 20% mark...

If, by accident, you should put some in the freezer and with a slip of the hand, the ice should be discarded ....guess whats left....:-)

Yes Eldrick, I do know it is illegal. But that does not stop it from being made, does it now.
