Thanks for the tip about the vinegar Mildred......I only have malt.......I don't want to use the balsamic, that is too expensive to waste....

Wash a plastic shower head in the top basket (after rinsing)..comes up a treat...

Every month, pour a glass full of ordinary vinigar in the bottom of the machine & do an empty hot wash...comes up sparkling new & helps prevent limescale & white residue on the element in hard water areas (like ours)

This was recommended by a technician after we had teething troubles due to hard water, and just using tablets. Was also told to just use separate powder & rinse aid as this is better.

ps......a loo brush......really ??

Sally Moonchild Report 28 Jul 2008 12:00

We have a water softener too, the limescale around here is very bad......so I don't use salt, but do use rinse aid.....I can also use the cheapest dishwasher tabs and still get really good results....

....poster is right about glasses going cloudy over time.....and never put silver or silver plate in because the chemicals damage it....

....I have just put the guards where you rest the saucepans on the gas hob in the dishwasher......and I put in the shelves from the oven too.....

I have had dishwashers for many years....

We had a water softener installed & was told don't add salt to dishwasher.
Also told to use less powder after too - don't know why as usually as you add salt the water would be soft anyway! Anyway used less & the stuff inside comes out just as clean !!

I cook daily with wooden spoons, and always put them in dishwasher. Haven't damaged one yet.
I put one of those wooden/formica chopping boards through a few times, and it split in two.
Highly coloured food scraps (tomato sauce, beetroot) may plastic lunchboxes turn pink.

if you do put the pets bowls in them make sure you re rinse them before using for their food. Vets Tip ,
Some animals can get a sore mouth from licking their bowls which will still have rinse aid etc dried on them.
We had to take our old cat to the vet with mouth problems and he was diagnosed as being allergic to the bowls being washed in the dishwasher. I always rinse the bowls before I use them and our old cat was then fine,.current girl doesnt get any problems either

it always puzzles me............the instructions WE had said to put the knives and forks in points upwards.........Seems double daft to me.....you have just sterilized them and are going to pick them out by the business ends.
also a woman, I think in america was killed( MAY be an Urban Legend) by falling on the points up knives........

SOME knife handles cant stand the heat, and will crack!!

as someone else has said.......dont forget the salt.
the softener needs it!!!

Helen I will tell her about the dog bowls as I know she has a dog, although I'm sure she will already do this.
I do understand about the high temperature sterilizing things but its just the thought of it, lol
At least I can now tell her she isn't the only one. xx

Sounds a tad extravagent Shirley, to run the washer with just a toilet brush in,when she could put it into bleach.

You can buy new brushes for 48p each in our local Wilkinsons lol xx

Not kidding at all Mau, my face must have been a picture when she told me this. She did say she put it in by its self then went on to explain about the high temp and there would be no germs left. I wasn't convinced, lol. shirley.xx
