As Dizzi's thread has gone................here's another.

There has been a breakthrough in Alzheimer's treatment at last.

A new drug is being trialled that is effective in drastically slowing the progression of this cruel disease.

Any one of us could fall victim to it, although most people assume it is a disease of the elderly, many thousands develop symptoms in their 40's and 50's.

Sadly, this won't help Mum who is in late stage Alzheimers, but it is fantastic news for all of us.

It is truly a very sad disease.....it can hit anyone.....

A Gt.Uncle who used to make by hand, working model steam engines....

OH's Aunt who, cruelly, was a nursing Sister at Banstead Asylum, and is now in a home....quite happy, but does not recognise family.....

.....I think it is a very sad ending, especially for the loved ones, who may not have the parent they always knew.....

It's not simply losing the memory..............it affects reasoning, spatial awareness, speech and understanding of language is lost, eventually her ability to swallow and mobility will go.

Mum will cry at her reflection in the mirror as she has no idea who keeps looking at her.....................she has to be shown how to hold a cup and drink every single time.......the double incontinence, feeding and total dependence on others for every little thing is just horrible to watch.

Sorry to be blunt, but it is a cruel disease that affects the sufferer and their loved ones in the most devastating way...............until it happened to our family, I simply didn't understand, yet I worked with Alzheimer's sufferers for years.

Gwen................have pm'd you to avoid this one being zapped as well.

It is a brilliant breakthrough, and will make a huge difference to sufferers in the future. It is such a horrible condition.

As long as they offer it to sufferers in the early stages...............the ones available now are not given until the middle stages and Mum had hers stopped after 18 months as it was deemed too expensive!

Her fulltime care which she is paying for herself, out of the money from the sale of her home does save the NHS a small fortune................surely a tiny part of that could have been spared to keep her lucid a little longer:(

I saw breaking news on tv. and pray that it will be able to cure/or stem this dreadful disease and will be available to all.

Too late also for my Dad but sincerely hope this discovery will be what everyone's been waiting and hoping for.
