One of the headstones of my great great grandparents is very worn and I cannot read the whole of a quote that is written. Can anyone help me complete the quote that is used as I cannot frind what it is from my searches on the internet. It goes as follows:
"I heard the voice" (the next is illegible and then follows with) '"his end was peace"
Has anyone ever heard of this quote before that can tell me the whole of the quote. Thanks

Don't know the quote but a good tip to help read gravestones is to take some chalk with you and run it along the grooves of the letters. makes them much easier to read.

Roughly how many words do you think might have been missing? Two, six, twenty?

I'll have a rummage in a quotations book ...

Nothing obvious. I'm wondering if it was a biblical quote?

Unfortunately that part of the stone was so badly eroded that I couldn't tell how many words it was either. If it's any help, the stone was from the year 1915

Thanks for the help it is very much appreciated and means a lot. It is just curiosity on my part because at least I have seen the names and dates and know where they are buried.

There is a hymn that says:

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
"Come unto me and rest."

Could it be that?

I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, O weary one lay down,
Your head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was,
So weary, worn and sad;
I found in Him my resting place,
And He has made me glad.

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“Behold I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down and drink, and live.”
I came to Jesus, and I drank
From that life-giving stream
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in Him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say,
“I am this dark world’s light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,
And all thy days be bright.”
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In Him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk
’Til pilgrim days are done.

this would seem to be the verse, it's all over several MI sites ...

" I heard the voice of Jesus say
Come unto me and rest,
Lay down thou weary one,
Lay down Thy head upon my breast. "

I think that " His end was peace " is fairly common too, I think it's on one of 'mine'.

Hope this helps

Again, I really appreciate all the help. Means a lot. It is nice to be able to keep this information together in my family tree when the stone is completely worn I will have a record of it.

Why not contact a stonemason, who makes headstones, he might have that written somewhere.

Have a look on the rear of the stone - you might well find the name of the stone mason who cut and erected the stone. It could well be still trading.

You could also take a rubbing of the stone - with some greaseproof paper and chalk - you might get a better impression of the quotation, or at least some of the missing letters.

Good luck

It could just say "I heard the voice of the Lord" That would be fairly common as a memorial quote for those times I would think.

Have your tried pouring water over the headstone. It can make it esier to read.

Time for the Ancestor poem........

Your tombstone stands among the rest,
Neglected and alone.
The name and date are chiseled out
On polished marbled stone.
It reaches out to all who care
It is too late to mourn.
You did not know that I exist
You died and I was born.
Yet each of us are cells of you
In flesh, in blood, and bone.
Our blood contracts and beats a pulse
Entirely not our own.
Dear Ancestor the place you filled
One hundred years ago
Spreads out among the ones you left
Who would have loved you so.
I wonder if you lived and loved,
I wonder if you knew
That someday I would find this spot,
And come to visit you.
