Blkackbirds like fruit, I put out babanas that have gone over, pears, apples, grapes but not tried oranges. Obviously your Robin thinks it is cock Robin LG. :-D

Blkackbirds =blackbirds
babanas = bananas

I had an amazing Robin fight in the garden yesterday. I have a resident male and a young usurper thought he would try his luck at the feeder. Oh dear he did not get of lightly :-D

11 wood pigeons, five male blackbirds, 2 female blackbirds, lots of sparrows, and a robin have all been here this morning :-D

Does anyone know if any of the above will eat clementines?

Shaun sorry, missed your post. Yes theya re very hungry at the moment. That is a big family of long tailed tits, apparently they go around in family groups. One thing we have never had in the garden is a woodpecker although we get them just up the road on the golf course.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 16 Jan 2013 16:23

thanks Carol, I have registered.

Mau yes I saw that, I was telling my OH about it this morning. I had not realised that long tailed tits were so small, even though we get them in the garden. Apparently they weigh the same as a pound coin. The way the latest one to join the group jumped into the middle of the group to keep warm was great. Lovely to see I wonder if they will put the video on UTube?

Out in the garden this morning,clearing snow.

As soon as I'd scattered seeds,raisins and nuts etc. the birds darted out from underneath the bushes and it got me wondering how on earth they keep warm perched in the trees overnight?
Well tonight on Winterwatch was the answer.... There was unique footage of tiny long-tailed jays/tits jostling for position on a branch and snuggling close together to give each other body heat.

Chris,Michaela and Martin were thrilled as,even they'd never ever seen this happen before. It was magic! anyone else watch the programme? :-D

Jane it probably is the same bird as I think robins are very territorial.

We have a hedge around the back garden and since it has been very cold underneath the hedge has been a hive of activity with small birds moving fallen leaves, it looks as though they are getting plenty of insects and worms to eat, but as soon as I go out with food they stop foraging and take the easy option :-D :-D

Jane Report 15 Jan 2013 21:53

Ann the minute I wander down the garden with the bag of seed one of the Robins suddenly appears.I think it is the same Robin each time as it always pops out of the same tree and onto the same branch :-D

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 15 Jan 2013 21:32

Robins can be very aggressive Jane can't they? But I love them. Yes they are very hungry, we had to buy more food today as we had run out.

Sylvia how lovely to have a swan visit, good job it didn't land on the bird table though.

Being eaten out of house and home here lol.I have got through a £5 bag of peanuts in just the last 3 days ,plus 2 Suet filled Coconuts.I put seed down on 3 tree stumps at the bottom of the garden and that seems to go in a flash.The Robins are the first ones there .One Robin dive bombed another this morning and knocked it straight off one of the stumps :-S.
