Topsy, our youngest feline, is in the doghouse at the moment.

On Tuesday evening, during our tea, our next door neighbour called us to look at an injured bird that "a cat has just caught". It turned out that Topsy was the culprit.

We went out, and were pleased - in the circumstances - to see that the male blackbird was very mobile, although he couldn't fly. He was very hard to catch, which again is very encouraging. As it was very cold, we brought him in and kept him in a cool room in one of those cardboard pet carriers, with hay, seeds and water.

Yesterday morning, he was still alive, and very perky. At the vets, Mr Vet said he would be able to be released eventually, so hubby and I were going to take him to West Hatch, in Taunton. However, quite by chance Mr Vet then noticed an injury right next to the bird's jugular, which apparently would have been causing Little Man a lot of pain. So he was humanely euthanased. :-((

I couldn't understand how Topsy caught the bird, with two bells on her collar. Until I noticed that the collar was missing.

Grrrrr ............. this has happened before, the little toad ............

Oh dear, sad for poor Mr Blackbird, but it is what cats do I'm afraid. she wont think she has done wrong. and you did all you could for him, did the vet charge you?

Our cat used to bring in w/pigeons through the cat flap!!! we came home to find feathers everywhere and really expected to find a dead bird featherless.....but nope he was sitting on curtain rail in the bedroom:o))

To my knowledge, Dunnocks dont have red backs. They're 2 shades of grey, no other colour....

don't forget folks if you put bread out, make sure it is moist or else it can swell up in the birds throat and cause choking..

Whirley, mine is 'slate grey with reddish brown back'....have just put out half a coffee cake..are sweet things ok? BC XX

As you say, that's what they think they're here for. I just told her she's in the doghouse, although all she heard was "Topsy, blah blah blah .......". She looked at me as if to make the old girl happy though .........

No, he didn't charge anything. He said that with wildlife, there's no charge, which was appreciated.

Cold and damp here. Nothing much happening in the garden, the usual w/pigeons and blackbirds, couple of blue tits, sparrows and a dunnock.

Feeling abit better and off to have shower :o))

just looked at the Dunnock, yes grey/browny colour, lovely bird.Thanks for that.

My Nuthatches are flying abt and eating like mad, I guess they;re all pairing now ready for spring...

Hi Folks just back from taking OH out for lunch, went to the garden centre as they have a brilliant wee cafe bit. which looks out over open fields and they have a lot of wild life there, wish the couple on the table by the window would have moved quicker as we could not see the birds lol but I did see a nutcatcher and quite a few diferent kinds of tits as well as a heron.

You need to visit Symonds Yat and sit out in the warm sunny afternoons to come (we hope) and watch the birds, then go up to the Viewpoint and watch the Peregrine Falcons, they'll be up there now getting ready for spring,so will all the twitchers laiden down with scopes etc, they invite you to look through them, fantastic sights:o) sometimes you can see the deer that nip out of the Forest for some nice fresh green grass, a buzzard or two fly past and if its clear enough l think you can see The Kymins hill, which as the crow flies we are 2 mins away from:o))

Apparently at New Fancy View you can view the Goshawks this week.

Now that would be exciting, perhaps l could see the Hawfinch aswell!! but need to shift this bug first!!
Vic has a scope now but not very nimble at setting it up yet, by the time it was sorted we would have frightened every one andthing away!! lol
had to put it away last w/e as the little man was here:o)))
