Hi Sue, and everyone

I don't remember having orange juice or cod liver oil at school ...... just milk. That would be from about 1944 to 1951.

Mum used to give me calf's (calves') foot jelly when I was little ............. it came in a jar, and I was supposed to have 1 spoonful every morning.

I loved it, and used to take jar and spoon into the front room, sit in a chair with my feet on the surround to the hearth, and scoop more than 1 spoonful out of the jar ............ until Mum would come in to take it away from me!

It was supposed to be very good for children and invalids .............. but it is largely water so ??????? its nutritional value :-D

OH does both all the grocery shopping and most of the cooking ............ I do write the shopping list, and thus determine what we will be eating.

He does one big shop a week, usually on a Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning. That gives us fresh meat, veggies etc for the weekend.

We also keep the freezer well stocked ................. he will often buy a joint of meat that is twice the size that we need, and ask the butcher to cut it into 2 halves, one of which we then freeze.

Goodnight,

Goodnight Amanda - with the number of food banks popping up everywhere you could be right. If families can't afford basic food, they are unlikely to be buying fruit and other nutritious things for their children. :-0

Tecwyn

Tecwyn Report 20 May 2013 23:35

Who is Persia? :-D

Tecwyn Report 20 May 2013 23:34

Can understand your mother being concerned about your weight Persia, but some children are just naturally thin. My daughter had painfully thin legs when she was little, and was reluctant to walk anywhere. I was convinced there was something wrong with her.

She would kill for thin legs now :-D

The way things are going in this country I wouldn't be surprised if rickets and such like return :-(

Have a good day Sue , don't eat to many biscuits at the meeting :-0

I'm going be be off now as it is getting late .

Sleep well Tec and have a good day Huia and Persie :-)

Persephone Report 20 May 2013 23:29

My mother was very concerned about my weight, When I was 3, I weighed 2st 6lbs and when I was 4, I weighed 2st 11lbs and at 5, I was 3st 1lb (that 1lb was very important).. so I was constantly monitored and marched off to the local pharmacy to be weighed...

Her cousin told me (after my mother died) how fanatical my mother was.

Result: all this so called fattening up has resulted in me being overweight in my latter years.

I don't think my younger brother and sister had these cod liver oil and orange juice so I think that by the 60's it was no longer in common use.

I must be off now and get ready for my busy day.

Goodnight Up-toppers and a good day Down-underers <3 <3

I remember the orange juice concentrate Sue - it was issued free through child clinics here.
The orange juice, cod liver oil, and vitamins were a Government sponsored measure to make up for the unavailability of fruit during the war years, there was a lot of rickets among children due I believe to lack of nutrition and vitamins in the 40s.
Not sure how long that went on for, but into the 50s I think.

SueMaid Report 20 May 2013 23:14

I used to have a spoonful of cod liver oil and a spoonful of some kind of orange juice concentrate. Apparently I liked the oil but not the juice :-S

Tecwyn Report 20 May 2013 23:11

I used to have a spoonful of Virol, a malt extract, that I expect was the same as your Maltexo. Also cod liver oil every day at school, with vitamin tablets.

I am an expert supermarket shopper :-D :-D :-D

Huia Report 20 May 2013 23:03

Persie, you grew up the same way I did. We had Glucose D as children (cant remember having it by the spoonful), and a spoonful of Maltexo (with cod liver oil) each day, dad called that 'stinking fish'. Loved it. I still have a small amount of glucose d in a jar, have had it for ages, decided to buy more, but no luck. I might try the health food shop, but suspect it has been abandoned. I think it was the Glaxo company. Do they still exist? Must do some googling.

SueMaid Report 20 May 2013 23:01

Hello Persie :-)

I don't like my OH grocery shopping with me - I spend twice as much :-(

Persephone

Persephone Report 20 May 2013 23:00

Hmmm... just googled and saw where it is an Indian product.. maybe they have it in the spice and lentil shops in Sandringham Village.

I am sure it didn't come from India when I bought it.

Persephone

Persephone Report 20 May 2013 22:58

It is absolute ages since I have purchased glucose D... I used to get told off when I was young for eating great spoonfuls of the stuff.

Probably my mother was concerned about overload as I was also required to have maltexo morning and night which I loved.

Now seeing the others posts have to wonder if it was a kiwi invention.

Huia , I have never heard of the Glucose powders either :-S

Shopping doesn't bother me to much really , my OH does all the cooking , so I don't get the stress of deciding what to put on the table each day .
I just wander about looking gormless I expect .....lol
