Berona Report 13 Jul 2009 10:55

Sydney - Parramatta area.

Is there a catch to this?

Took me twelve years of researching looking for a convict in the family. Best I could do was my gr/great grandmother's brother - sent out for seven years for stealing a brass tap.

SueMaid Report 13 Jul 2009 11:00

Not so far from me, Berona:)) No catch I'm just interested in where all the Aussies live.

Is Linda related to Mick?

I'm afraid to say anything on your thread, Sue. Every time I have said something over the last week, I come back looking for it - and it's gone!

SueMaid

SueMaid Report 13 Jul 2009 11:12

It gets a bit like that Berona. If someone reports this thread then we know it's someone who's jealous of us living in God's own country:))

LindainHerriotCountry Report 13 Jul 2009 11:46

Why would I be related to Mick?
Not that that would be a bad thing, you understand.

Berona, my husbands convict was obviously a better class of criminal, he got 10 years for stealing a silver watch and chain. Stupid man got caught because he pawned it in his real name!

It always seems odd to me that Aussies are proud of being descended from criminals, not the British way at all.

GranOfOzRubySlippers Report 13 Jul 2009 12:08

But Linda, we are not British, we are Australian and very proud of our heritage.

The convicts were sent to this great land and made a life for themselves that they would never have know in England, Ireland or Scotland.

One of my Irish ancestors was call the Matriarch of Parramatta.

It is a common theme in OZ, down and out makes good and has a decent happy life.

Proud of my heritage, too right mate.

Hello Gail and all......my neice is a midwife and her and her husband emigrated to Isa and after saving like crazy for 15 years and 2 children later are building a house in Cairns.

They have been back 4/5 times but now the children are older it is too expensive for the fares.

It was lovely 3 years ago,. They came over beginning of December and just before they left for home in mid January it snowed. First time the children had seen snow and their faces were a picture :)))

Well... I think I qualify for top Notch Aussie status, I do!!

My numerous x times gt grandfather was sent on the First Fleet, so there.. stealing mutton... and he dumped his missus, well, he had to, didn't he? And married Mary Rose from the Brothel Ship... so there. Well, I haven't actually proved he was the same one... but I am almost certain he was... that is my next bit of research, once Ancestry give me a good deal.... ;¬))

So, do I qualify????? Please? *smiles ingratiatingly*

Oh, and I invited an Aussie from Sydney to stay for Christmas, one year....he adopted us as his Brit family lol!! He never left for months!!

He taught me all about Aussie red, and how to say G'day properly... so I am almost fluent in Australianese!!
