Hi well I´m back. Not been away really, just concentrating on someone else´s gen, and not had time to talk. I enjoy subjects which are abit different - like the one about the lead buttons, something to stoke up the old brain cells. That reminds me I have just found in a box a fold up metal cup about size of egg cup. It squashes down to about 1/2 inch. Anyone know about this?

Hi Chica

I've seen fold-up plastic/bakelite cups ...... both very recent and 50 or so years ago.

Could it have been something that someone would slip in their pocket and use, maybe, to drink spa water?

Hey Chica,

Wasn't that what they used in the Victorian days on hunts, folding silver hunting cups and the like.
I've seen modern metal folding cups with whisky flasks.

Thanks for your ideas, just measured it. It is 1.1/2 inches dia. by less than 1/2 in deep when closed and under 2 ins when extended, it consists of 5 metal rings and has a separate lid. Not silver unfortunately. I´m wondering now if it could be for a tot of rum. My granddad was a sailor in his youth , perhaps they were issued with one for their rum ration, but I have never seen one before and I´m always poking round antique shops.

I was going to say it sounds like something somebody would carry to drink alcohol of some sort. Maybe it is for walking or climbing, it does sound interesting chica (welcome to the thread by the way) please let us know if you find out what it actually is.

Hello to all those who have posted since I was last on here, please keep returning for a chat.

BC I thought I started it before you went away but maybe not.

Yes siree,

It's snowing again in Glasgow, Scotland and we never managed to get rid of what fell on 23rd december, it just froze solid. Looks very picturesque and there are still three days until we go back to work so perhaps it will have all melted by then!

Chica, the rum idea sounds quite plausible, just the right size for a wee tot of rum but up here in Scotland we are reputed to just drink it straight from the bottle!!
Of course the lairds in the big hoose would have had similar drinking vessels for hunting, grouse shooting or of course picnics for the ladies who would never drink out of a bottle................. :))

Bakelite Sylvia, you are really going back now,

Picture the scene.............Oh Papa, may we partake of some of the health giving spa waters with our little folding bakelite cups, please Papa??

Whit, drink it? Naw, ye'll waash yur face in ut lik the rest o' us!

See you on the other side Sylvia x

Happy New Year... ...... .... ....

Hello all, just time to wish you all a very Happy New Year before hubby puts tea on table. I've not had chance to come back on until now, but I was going to say in my first post that I come from Gods own County, Yorkshire as my name suggest, lol.

I have to agree with Jean that I have found talking to some of the ladies in here, and mentioning that I was talking to a friend in so and so, all over the world. I have to explain then how I have so many friends abroad.

I have one of those little fold down cups in a leather case, it was my late father-in-laws, and someone mentioned it was a travelling medicine dose cup. Don't know if it's right or not.

I love this thread, there's a lot of names I recognise but a lot of new ones, it's lovely to meet you all.

Tea is out so must go.

Jean it was lovely, hubby is pretty good, he has to be. We had roast beef, sprouts, carrot and turnip mash, roast potatos and mash. He tends to overfill me though as I eat very little.
Just looked out of the window and it is thick of snow and coming down fast, the sky is full so I suppose our street will be impassable again.

Hi Ann and everyone

It's raining here again, and pretty warm at around 9C

Your weather in the UK sounds like what we had this time last year ......... it snowed about December 16, and then several times more, before the thaw finally came in early February. Not normal for Vancouver! In fact, probably not known to have occurred like that for at least 40+ years!

Had to venture out to the local mall earlier today ............... I had to pay off a department store account before Jan 4. It was crazeeeeeee! We got back home as soon as possible ..... but not before also visiting the chocolate shop!

We're having trout for dinner tonight ................... OH cooks on Saturday and Sunday, I do Monday, we alternate and/or work together on Tuesday through Thursday, and try to eat out on Friday at one of our local little places (not expensive!).

That Frank! Not sure what I'll do with him!!!
