Tracing Powell's from Rhonda Wales

My maternal line is Powell which I have managed to trace back to the mid 1700's all living in the midlands area. I was told that the Powells came from the Rhonda Valley Wales and walked to England to find work. Does anyone know the history of the area during this period and why they would have left the Valleys to find work, also where would I start to research records during the 1700's in Wales. Thankyou
