"I'm not sure what IE8 is, but does it account for the problem I am having trying to 'view' new matches in my hot matches. Previously contacted ones seme to be ok."
- it stands for internet explorer 8, I understand.

However, genes reunited staff really should add / change the wording because the ongoing issues are nothing to do with versions of browser. They have acknowledged that there are problems in the site that the technical team is working on to implement solutions, the problems include signing in, error messages, hot matches system not functioning, and profile pictures not working; and I wish that they would put a sticky at the top of each board advising their customers of this.

Hi Dennis, Welcome to the boards. Notice this is your first time on here. Hope you enjoy your family history research.

You might like to read the Help Clinic and the info under the Help button on the bar above. If you have not already done so. Also if you go to Genealogy Chat on the boards there are more helpful hints.

Good luck to you in your searches, and remember if you need help just ask.

I haven't bothered you with a daily reply, but thought after a week or so, I should add my two cents worth.

Today I was able to access Genes Reunited using Firefox as my browser, but when I tried to see my tree, I received the familiar Maintenance error message.

I switched to the IE version 8 and was able to log in and it found my tree, with all my records definitely there.

At present I am keeping a daily log of what records I update and what people I enter as new. That way I know at the end of the day that my records and updates are not being lost due to the recent problems. So far so good, since the problem started sometime early this month, no records have been lost. I have added 78 new people so far this month and all of them are there.

So if one can use IE8, as a fall back solution, whilst it is horrible and has nowhere near the features of Firefox, I have found it reliable.

Well that's my 2 cents worth from far off Australia.

I sent a message yesterday saying that I am fed up not being able to open any of my hot matches. Prior to that I did not have any new matches for months, now I have nearly 50 some with 30 plus claimed relationship matches.
The reply I received was most obviously a template, and I have replied in a rather more exasperated tone. I joined the Platinum charge a couple of months ago and so far have not been able to use it. I am going to request a rebate, are others doing the same.

OOOOH I could scream with the frustration of it all.

Sorry if I have rambled on but had to let rip.!!

Brisbane Thorne,

I like you am keeping a record of any updates I do. I have not altered my internet explorer (I believe I am on IE9!!!) but can get into my tree using the mini-tree home page. If you click on it it tells you to open tree builder and then you're in.

Spanish eyes...those hot matches are (I think) ones you have previously discarded - mine are. Far more annoying than not being able to open is not being able to discard!

I thought they'd cracked it when I launched from an email from them and got an unadulterated page with proper adverts flashing around (including 89M Eruo lottry tonight....)but hey ho, no!

:-)

So,another day with the system not working correctly.......what a shambles.

OK so nothing is life threatening but for those of us who are so committed to our research, constantly help each other, and learn so much about history, the development of the standard of life for our ancestors etc this problem is most frustrating.
Three months is a long time for constant problems, GR should at least have the courtesy to give regular accurate uptodate information. They are accountable for providing a service that we pay for.

On a positive note, MAYBE we will be back to normal soon.
I am peeved that I have not had a reply from GR to my second message to them, I wonder why? It was not rude, insulting etc, I simply asked for more detail and a refund of some sort, having decided just prior to this fiasco to up grade to Platinum.

I will look in again later today.

Ha ha no hot matches for months then when we get some, we can't view them. You have to laugh or you would cry!!

Seriously I'm frustrated I can'r get to them. Have time off work, by the time it's sorted I'll be back at work and no time to look .

My Hot Matches sorted themselves out yesterday. Most have scuttled off to the land of lost socks.
The few that remain are marked NEW and I am able to access them!
trouble is I'm a little under the weather at the moment.
Hoping that they are still there when I feel up to tackeling them.

Hi friends

Nothing changed as far as I can see since I sent my last message last week. This morning (In Brisbane) I clicked on a mail notification in my email. This took me immediately to my preferred browser, and allowed me to log into my GR account and read the incoming mail. I then went to the home page and after a couple of attempts succeeded. But when I tried my Family Tree - the familiar error screen came up. Looking at the number of posts in the last hour I would say most users are sleeping (its 4:01 am in London after all) - so the servers cannot be overloaded !

I logged out of my Firebox Browser and using the horrible IE8 browser I was able to log in and access my tree. So nothing appears to have changed since last week ?

Best wishes to you all

William, if you read Phil Moir's blog (drop down menu under Community) it explains what to do if your favourite browser gives the error message. If you see the current date and time on the error message then it iis genuine, if not then it is a question of your browser/cache needing attention (sometimes a refresh will work).

I am getting REALLY REALLY fed up of this. I haven't been able to launch my tree properly for weeks. I can't use the advanced home page because nothing works - I immediatley get the same message Sorry we are doing essential site maintenance. I am fed up of getting patronising replies about it being a time out browser issue. It's a GR issue. I don't see why I and many others have to downgrade our browser because of problems caused by GR.

"Genes Reunited was ranked as the No.1 family website based on market share of visits among all UK websites in the July - December 2010 Hitwise Lifestyle - Family industry Awards"......well there's an award that isn't going to be repeated...

Kense

Kense Report 28 Jun 2011 08:26

Judith, the problem is that once your browser associates the maintenance page with the particular Genes page that you want to see, it will tend to display that maintenance page.

It was due to Genes that the page was displayed in the first instance (that problem seems to have been sorted) but subsequently you need to reset your browser. Pressing F5 often works, if not try CTRL F5 (together).

Also if you are using IE9 you may have to click on the compatibility view icon (broken rectangle) at the top of the page.

Check your hot matches. Mine appear to be fixed. They are all discarded which is what I wanted, and I can now look at the discarded ones and open them to view.

This is probably the most useful bit of information that has been written about IE9. Why couldn't GR have said so is beyond me

I run in compatability view however when I select the 'display all websites in compatabilty view" option under the CV check box, gmail chucks a hissy fit says it works better without it. I am on IE8.
