I work for an institution which is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week and 52 weeks of the year.I am fortunate to work part time so Im at home more than some people who I work with.

The School summer holidays are great but the problem is most of the people I work with have children.
Those who dont have Children also wish to have holidays in the summer months

This proves to be a problem when it comes to booking family holidays as work still has to be covered.

We are not allowed to take children out of school during term time which I can understand but a five term year would make a huge difference. I also agree with Jacky about having longer off in the winter. Schools shut if the snow arives so maybe this should be considered.

From my understanding the original reason for having six weeks off school many years ago was so the children in rural areas could help with the harvest, and fruit and veg picking.

I have to say at a Comprehensive School level, especially around GCSE exam time, the teachers at my Childs school go in during the Whitsun holiday to provide revsion classes for the students and also after School classes.
They have been doing this since my eldest was there five years ago.

They do spend a lot of time outside School hours helping with School productions, open evenings, fund raising events etc.

My kids get all of July and August off and a few days end of June beg of Sept depending on where the days fall. That said they only had a four day weekend for Easter not 2 weeks like you've all had so it evens out in the end.
Do they get bored ? Sometimes but that's down to them not doing things that are available to them !! They can swim all afternoon and evening at the local pool. The library is in walking distance. Museums and attractions are a half hour subway ride away in most cases, and don't all cost a small fortune to use. They have plenty of friends to hang out with, so as long as they mix them up no bordeom there either !! As they get older they have summer jobs to do to earn the money they so love to spend .
