I was probably asleep or crying much of the time

but ................... my mother was unable to be churched because of the weather of 1940 ................ and that was very difficult for a religious Anglican in those days. And thus became part of the family lore :-D

Sandie :-D :-D :-D

Did try to hide my age, but was soon sussed out. I am 66 and remarkably well preserved. I do sometimes say I am 93 just to get someone to say "well, you look very good for your age"'

Knew deep down that Sylvia was older than me (think she told me during one our emotional rants) but I truly find it very difficult to believe she saw 1940.

No, Sylvia, I am not calling you a liar :-D But 71 sounds positively ancient when you are only 66.

Wisechild ~~ John's age changes on different threads, he's going backwards he was 80 or nearly 80 a month or so ago.!!

A self confessed grumpy old man , John ~~ you should be getting a happier soul if you're getting younger ;-)

Hope you are feeling better since your post of 5.9.12,strokes are nasty cruel things.
Take care and chill a bit. , (keep the BP down) :-) Health is Wealth.

Blimey, Sylvia I keep thinking you are much, much younger than me. Bout same age as my daughter (30). Were you fighting in war? :-D ;-)

Now I know you are a dear old thing in lace, I will be much more gentle and respectful :-D

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Sep 2012 00:12

well that explains me then

went through the 1940 winter, the 1946/7 winter, AND the 1963/64 winter

so no way can I be normal :-D :-D :-D

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 23 Sep 2012 15:20

Detective My parents stayed virginal after their 1943 marriage till my father finished fighting the Bosch (oops RR) from his dug out on Rhos on Sea promenade. I was created at a party at the Rhos Abbey Hotel in Nov 1945 to celebrate victory. My father celebrated twice - first time he was sick, second time his hat blew off. And I was born the customary months later in 1946 on the hottest Saturday (37C) since record began - only to be hit by 4 feet of piled snow that winter in a salty seaside resort :-( :-( And a merlin that flew into my pram and tried to peck at me. ;-)

That is why I am so old and grumpy, incidentally. No one went through 46/47 and 62/63 winters and remained positive and normal.

Wisechild You can remember 1928 if you use my trick. I used to ask my grandma :-D ;-)

John.
Unless you´re lying about your age, you can´t possibly remember any of that.
Even I can´t remember that far back.

LSD? I can remember, as a young Executive of Tesco, addressing ladies groups about the likely effects of decimalisation after 14 Feb 1971. Price increases were a major topic. I can remember the "party" line I was to toe. "It is going to be new and exciting, the rest of the world is counting in tens, it will not make any difference to the pound in your pocket." I would have been lynched the following year (15% increase in retail price index in 1971) - but had moved to manage another store by then.

And Phil has been to the same positivity school as me. We have done away with the populat black Model T and you now have an exciting Ford Edsel crossed with a DeLorean (my words, not his). Few faults in our new car, which has been tested thoroughly on a drive from Shoreditch to the Olympic Village. Crashed it a couple of times at Poplar and under the Bow flyover. Once the brakes failed, the other time we could not get sun vizor down.

But rest assured - the team is working really hard as the Ford Edsel slips down a steep embankment into the Lake of Despair. It will be the most beautiful car at the bottom of the lake.

Oh, how I wish I could be transported back to 1928. As long as I can have my 2013 pension please. On gold standard - how nice it would be to take my bar of gold to the bank and get equivalent cash. Or take cash and get some gold. Full employment, houses costing £200, no debt cos you couldn't get it easily, inside bathrooms, eating food when it is in season - no strawberries in January from Afghanistan. Telephones with only 3 numbers to dial. No telly, no computers, no mobiles, not even a Wii or an IPod. Letters to write, bicycles and motorbikes to ride.

But none of that would be exciting and new :-( :-( :-(

OK I know you mean money. Googling LSD I got to the tenth page of results before there was a mention of LSD being money.

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 23 Sep 2012 10:45

If you read further down (or up!) the thread, SylviainCanada has copied a post from another thread. The original poster (Stephen) had received the following reply

"today 17/09/2012. they told me they have no intention of going back to the old tree
as they have erased it."

There have been various discussion on the board ever since the old tree was withdrawn. Even if the old version is still available to re-load, there were so many problems with it that it could not support features expected by the newer generation of FHistorians.

If anything, we the users need to work with GR to encourage them to make the current version more acceptable to the majority.

Who remembers LSD? There were probably many worries from our grandparents who wanted the introduction (Edit - to decimal coinage) to wait until they were passed caring.

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 22 Sep 2012 23:50

Sue, I was pleased to see him on the boards today (Saturday). They obviously have seen our feedback and are trying to address problems.

Significant that this was the first time admitted that "some like tree, some don't". Looks like a more formal announcement is now imminent, but my pessimistic streak tells me that absolutely no-one will be very happy - whether they like working with the present tree or still hanker after old one.

Customers don't seem to be treated like stakeholders. Yet we feel we are.

SueMaid Report 22 Sep 2012 23:26

There were posts on this site awhile back from people who moaned about how outdated the site is. Now they are attempting to bring it up to date and people are still moaning. The team can't win.

JohnLovesHorlicks

JohnLovesHorlicks Report 22 Sep 2012 23:20

Posted today at 1612 hours by Phil Moir on a thread on Suggestions Board (OP-Rollo). Nearest we have had to an announcement since 2nd August:

""Sorry, this may be considered one of these sporadic responses from myself, but please believe when I say that me and my dev team have been working very hard to make the right improvements for all users of the site. If I explain it this way. If we were Ford Motor Cars and after designing the Model T and everyone liked it but we decided job done no more changes we would be out of business. Change is inevitable, and we have to try and work out what is right for members and what is right to stay competitive in the online genealogy business. Some members like the change some dont. We have to try and cover both camps. The tree is now developing and improving far faster in terms of features and core functionality that ever before. It is worth rechecking every couple of weeks as fixes are being deployed as soon as they are ready. The main site has new features coming. And when we do make improvements to the boards I will be reviewing all the suggestions that have been made. We cannot please everyone but we are trying to give you a better genealogy site for both family history research and discussion.I hope you stay with us.""

Patricia

I think you have very little chance in getting your old tree back.

This was posted on a thread (New Tree vs Old Tree) on Suggestions, the other day ..........

Stephen 17 Sep 2012 22:46

well I must say the old tree was a world beater for simplicity. I have had no end of arguments with GR and I have even told their team leader he's about as much use as a chocolate teapot; in fact I don't think he could organise a piss-up in a brewery.

today 17/09/2012. they told me they have no intention of going back to the old tree
as they have erased it.

stephen.

--------------

so ...... they have erased the tree ............ and we have all been told in the past that this was going to happen because the old tree was not compatible with a new more modern support system.

There is also very little evidence that GR staff have been reading ANY posts or threads on this board.

I do hope that you have been emailing them with your concerns, and not expecting to hear from GR on the Board.
